Your Baby Can Read program?

Ahh, the joys of early morning infomercials.  Have you heard of the "Your Baby Can Read" program?  It uses DVDs and flash cards and stuff to help little kids learn to read.  I know it's way easier to learn when kids are young, but I wondered if it really works and whether it's worth the money.  The program is $200, ouch!

  • no no no no no....

little kids learn from experiences and having fun and living.  There's plenty of time to push them to learn by flash cards and memorization later.  In school.  When they're 10.

We were just talking about this at our BCC class this week.  The overwhelming research shows (according to our teacher) that kids who are pushed early and shoved into an "academic" type of preschool early are the ones who burn out by 2nd grade.  She was really stressing to us to just enjoy and play with our kids and that that's all of the "teaching" they need.

It's hard because around here, I definitely think there will be pressure to "excel" and a lot of really really "driven" (to say it nicely) parents will make you feel bad or like you're letting your kids down.  But you're not!!

  • I agree 200% with Seattle_Jilln...I believe that the best thing you can do is to read to your kids (from birth) and have plenty of books available for them to read at their level. That's what fosters a love for reading. These "flash card" programs teach the basic skill, but in the long run, if your child doesn't enjoy reading, it will just be a chore.
  • My MIL wanted to get DD that for Christmas. I said no thanks.
