1st Trimester

1st Ultrasound Today

Hi, ladies...I haven't posted a lot but I wanted to let you all know, I had my first ultrasound today.  I'm almost 8 weeks, measuring a day behind my ticker, and everything looked great.

I heard and saw the heartbeat, which was 154 bmp. :)

For those who haven't gone yet, our appt. was almost 3 hours long.  We did the U/S, met with the OB specialist to go over do's/don'ts, got my blood drawn for STD check, HCG levels, etc. and then saw the doc.  I didn't have an internal today.

The only "bad" news I got is that my cervix is short.  It's 3.4 centimeters and they like it to be 4 cent.  I go back in two weeks for another U/S and more measuring.

Otherwise, it was REALLY cool to see the HB.  I wish you all luck and if you have any questions, I might be able to help ...but I consider myself no expert. :)

Re: 1st Ultrasound Today

  • I had my appt on Tuesday. They didn't give me an internal exam either, that will happen in my 12 week appt. I saw the h/b too, isn't it amazing? Congrats! It's such a relief to know that there's actually a baby in there.

  • oOh, how exciting! Congratulations! I have my first appointment next Wednesday (one day prior to 8 weeks), but no U/S scheduled... and I'm SO anxious!

I've never heard of cervical sizing, how interesting. What is the downside to being on the short side?

  • Congrats!  That's exciting!  I'll be going to our 1st drs appt on Tues., but they are just doing a medical interview w/a nurse and Q&A, then ordering a bunch of bloodwork.  I probably won't go back until 10 or 12 weeks after that.

  • Congrats!

3 hours, huh? That seems really long... is that average?

  • 3 hours?!? Wow, that's long! Neither of my 1st appts were that long, even with ultrasounds. ANYWAY, glad you saw/heard your baby!  SO exciting!
  • I think every doctor's office is different in terms of length.  I basically had three different appts. and also saw the pathologist for bloodwork.  Instead of bringing me in several times, they do it all at once, so it took 3 hours.

The downside to having a smaller cervix is that it COULD lead to bed rest, but they don't worry too much about it until later on the PGncy.  There's not a lot you can do about it, so it's just something you have to deal with.  It also could be harder to have a vaginal delivery.  She just wants to "keep an eye on it".

Due to my history I get an u/s at 10 and 12 weeks and then at 20. :)
