We’ve successfully cut out all bottles for my 15mo except a bottle of milk before naptime and bedtime. He loves these and we’re anticipating a rough time getting rid of them. Curious how people did this and what they prioritized: as intermediate steps, should we move to milk in sippy cups, so he gets the milk still, or do water in bottles so he gets the joy of sucking? Or just go immediately to water in sippy cups and nothing else?
Re: Best way to transition 15 month old off night time bottle?
We did this with our son at 15 months and what worked best for us was a gradual approach rather than going cold turkey. First we switched the naptime bottle to a sippy cup with milk — same milk, just different vessel. We did that for about a week until he barely noticed.
Then for bedtime we started watering down the milk very gradually over two weeks — a little less milk and a little more water each night until it was basically just water. By that point he had lost interest on his own.
The key for us was keeping the routine exactly the same — same time, same chair, same songs — just changing what was in the cup. The comfort is really about the routine more than the bottle itself at this age!
Good luck — it is easier than it seems once you start! 😊
