1st Trimester

5 weeks 4 days ( No Yolk sac )

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice or to hear from anyone who’s been through something similar.

I’m currently 5 weeks + 4 days pregnant and under the early pregnancy unit due to having had two previous miscarriages. Today I went to gynaecology for a scan, and they were able to see a gestational sac in the womb but no yolk sac yet.

They also found some fluid in my pelvis, which has made them consider the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy or a burst cyst. My hCG levels were around 9,500, and the doctor mentioned that they might normally expect to see more in the womb at this stage with levels that high.

I’ve been booked in for repeat blood tests in 48 hours (Saturday) and another scan next Thursday. They did offer to keep me in overnight to monitor for ectopic pregnancy, but said I could go home if I preferred, so I’ve come home to rest.

I don’t really feel like it’s ectopic as I’ve not had any pain or symptoms that would suggest that—just some lower backache, which I’ve also had in previous pregnancies.

I suppose I’m just hoping to hear from anyone who’s had a similar situation—whether things progressed positively (like going back later and seeing a yolk sac/heartbeat), or even if not, just to understand others’ experiences. The possibilities they’ve given me are a burst cyst, ectopic pregnancy, that the pregnancy may not continue, or that it might simply be too early to see more.

Thank you in advance for any advice or experiences you can share 🤍

Re: 5 weeks 4 days ( No Yolk sac )

  • his is such an anxiety-filled spot to be in, i’m really sorry you’re going through this 😔
5 weeks is still so early, and sometimes it really can just be too soon to see a yolk sac yet, even with higher hcg. dating can be off by a few days and that alone can change what shows up on the scan
i had a similar scare where they only saw a sac at first and it stressed me out so much, but a week later there was a yolk sac and heartbeat. those early scans can be really inconclusive
that said, the fluid and them mentioning ectopic is definitely why they’re being cautious, so the follow-up bloods and scan are the right next step. hcg trends matter more than a single number right now
the waiting in between is honestly the hardest part. try to take it one step at a time till your next scan
really hoping things progress well for you 🤍
