  • 1.) ʙᴀʙʏ ɴᴜᴍʙᴇʀ: 2

    2.) ᴅᴜᴇ ᴅᴀᴛᴇ (ᴡᴇᴇᴋꜱ+ᴅᴀʏꜱ): 38w2d, 3/14

3.) ɴᴇxᴛ ᴀᴘᴘᴏɪɴᴛᴍᴇɴᴛ: had one today, next one the 11th

    4.) ɢᴇɴᴅᴇʀ: Boy

5.) ꜱʏᴍᴘᴛᴏᴍꜱ: Pelvic pain/pressure, trouble walking, increase discharge, back pain, HB, contractions, insomnia

6.) ᴀɴʏᴛʜɪɴɢ ᴇxᴄɪᴛɪɴɢ/ᴀɴɴᴏʏɪɴɢ: I had a cervical check at my appointment today I'm a little over 3cm dilated and she said 70% effaced and I forgot the station.

7.) ɢᴛᴋʏ (ꜱʜᴀʀᴇ ᴀɴʏᴛʜɪɴɢ): Debating scheduling an induction due to being so far away from the hospital (1Hr+ without traffic) and wanting my toddler to be dropped off smoothly without a crazy transition. OB said I can schedule at 39w so this Saturday. Saw baby on ultrasound machine got some last minute sonogram photos, GBs swab and urine test. Baby measuring 38. I worry if I wait I'm at the hands of what life throws at me, potentially being stuck in hours long traffic idk my mind is all over not really sure what to do. One thing I don't like about this hospital is she said she'd manually break my water and I'm not liking the sound of that.

8.) Qᴜᴇꜱᴛɪᴏɴꜱ: anyone had a manual breaking of water? Experience?

  • I have had my water broken. I was a 7 at the start of that labor and when they broke my water he slammed into my cervix so hard he was born 15 minutes afterwards.

One thing to consider about having your water broken is that some hospitals put you on a 12 hour clock. So you either deliver in 12 hours or you get a c section. I was threatened with a c section once when I went in for an induction but my water had already broke that morning before arriving. I had her right at the 12 hour mark thankfully. I would also not allow any cervical checks if they broke my water. The risk of infection increases every time they check you. When I have gone in when my labor has already started and my water broke first I allowed 1 check upon arrival and one when I could tell I was reaching transition. So there needed to be a lot of pressure. To the point I was feeling pressure even when the contraction ended.

@emeraldcity603 when you were at a 7, how many weeks were you? And what number baby? Idk if I'll get to a 7 by Saturday.

thanks for sharing that helps me picture the reality. I just asked a few moms over in my area who delivered at the hospital I'm going to be delivering, and they stated they scheduled an induction and both ended up with cesareans because water had been broken for too long. I personally think that's ridiculous. With my first I didn't know what to expect I did get induced and developed an infection probably due to the amount of cervical checks they were doing and the delay of baby coming after my epidural. They asked if I wanted a C-section but I said no and they respected it. It was a 14h labor, but I don't think this hospital will be the same way. It seems they are pushing sections and that frustrates me. I just don't know what to do. Schedule the induction and have them break my water ask for no more than 2 checks and hope for the best. I don't want a C-section when I know how recovery can be vaginally.
  • It was baby number 3 and I was 40 weeks on the dot. No active labor at a 7 until they swept my membranes twice that day. Once in the am and once in the pm.

The fact they seem to push sections would be enough for me to say no to an induction with them. Most of my labors have started at night and traffic isn’t as bad then. I think all of mine except 1 started at night. My water broke at 5:30 am with my 1 odd ball. The rest were in the evening and middle of the night. I don’t know why you couldn’t just say no to breaking your water and yes to another induction method. Some hospitals are pushy but you have the right to say no to anything and they have to respect it.
  • I had my water broken at the hospital during my induction with my third, I wasn't aware of any concerns with it. It didn't hurt or anything like that, I ended up having a forceps delivery since I couldn't push my baby out, but he was huge and my epidural overnumbed me.
  • There was a 2018 study by ACOG that showed decreased morbidity for mom and baby with elective inductions at 39+0wga.
With this knowledge, I had an elective induction at 39 weeks with my 3rd pregnancy. The doctor came in and wanted to break my water, but I didn’t have an epidural yet and knew things could move quickly after my water was broken.
I said she could wait and would come recheck after the epidural —> but my labor progressed naturally and water ended up spontaneously breaking.
Rupture of membranes (water broken) longer than 12 hours does increase risk of infection, but it alone isn’t necessarily a primary indication for c-section.
So - I can appreciate the element of control scheduling an elective induction at 39 weeks allows you (I’m doing the same for baby #4!).  And I agree - I’d be surprised if the first step of the induction was the provider ruptured your membranes. But - you can always decline and ask for an alternative method to induce. There are other options.
  • Thank you ladies so much for sharing and giving me some mental support here. When I spoke to my OB at my appointment yesterday she was pretty clear to even reiterate that she'd give Misoprostol and break my water and give pitocin via IV. I think I may need to have another conversation with her or send a message via patient portal because maybe I'm not clear. I'm hoping all those interventions aren't all at once especially because I'd like the opportunity to get an epidural. I'd like my water to break naturally and give my body a chance to do what it needs to do also. A woman who gave birth over here locally at this hospital stated they put you on a 24h clock and if no progress then they push for the C-section.
  • I wouldn’t want to be on a clock. They will also be pushy about checking your cervix every so often. Which increases your risk of infection which strengthens their argument for the c-section at the 24 hour mark. I would wait until 40 weeks to schedule the induction. Your body will be more ready.
  • I tripped on my son's shoe and fell out the front door onto the pavement down a stair so I'm waiting for my husband to get home so I can go to the hospital for monitoring. Not how I wanted to spend my evening.
  • @RoseShadow873 oh no that sounds scary! Hopefully everything is ok!!
  • @RoseShadow873 Hoping everything is okay with you both. 🙏 That must of been really frightening.
  • 1.) ʙᴀʙʏ ɴᴜᴍʙᴇʀ: 4

    2.) ᴅᴜᴇ ᴅᴀᴛᴇ (ᴡᴇᴇᴋꜱ+ᴅᴀʏꜱ): March 28

3.) ɴᴇxᴛ ᴀᴘᴘᴏɪɴᴛᴍᴇɴᴛ: 4th ultrasound on the tenth to check for the whole baby's stomach being large thing and then normal weekly appointment.

    4.) ɢᴇɴᴅᴇʀ: girl

5.) ꜱʏᴍᴘᴛᴏᴍꜱ: so constipated and gassy, belly pains

6.) ᴀɴʏᴛʜɪɴɢ ᴇxᴄɪᴛɪɴɢ/ᴀɴɴᴏʏɪɴɢ: went to the hospital last night and everything ended up being ok! Today I went and got my hair cut and eyebrows done for the first time ever, I feel good that I did that before having the baby.

    7.) ɢᴛᴋʏ (ꜱʜᴀʀᴇ ᴀɴʏᴛʜɪɴɢ):

8.) Qᴜᴇꜱᴛɪᴏɴꜱ: What is everyone planning on doing to keep awake in the wee hours with a newborn? Anyone know any good games to play on the phone or have shows they are going to watch? I like reading but that also makes me tired so that won't work.
  • @RoseShadow873 I have no plan for staying awake, but that’s a good idea. I was hoping yo read because my anxiety helped me stay awake last time. Otherwise I would doomscroll which I certainly don’t intend to repeat 🫠

as for game recommendations, I really like puzzle games that are also kind of atmospheric. Monument Valley 1 & 2 are favorites. And I recently found a color puzzle game called I Love Hue that I’ve been enjoying.
  • @RoseShadow873 I love playing the New York Times word games when pregnancy insomnia hits - spelling bee, the crossword, etc.
