We want to use family names, so our options are limited.

Our name options are…

James
Theodore
Donald
Bailey
Park
Cooper
Taylor
John

So far I really like James as a first name, but all the rest feel like middle names. Which of the other ones would be good first names? Not Taylor, it’s my first name. And it’s my grandmother’s maiden name, so it also couldn’t be James Taylor or Donald Taylor, since both of those people already exist.

Last name starts with an H.

I like James and Theodore best, of those options. It gives you some flexibility with nicknames (Jamie, Jimmy, Teddy, Theo) and both are lovely, classic names.

Just as another option, especially if you think those all sound like middle names anyway, is to use the family names for middle names and just pick first names that you and your husband love. That is what my husband and I have done for both of our daughters. It can still be tricky getting a name to flow, but eventually something will just click!
