  Is it bad for a prenatal to have folate instead of folic acid?

  I found during my first pregnancy that my gag reflex got super sensitive. I had to switch to a prenatal gummy instead of the giant prenatal pills. I have really liked Olly. The flavors are nice and you only have to take 2, once a day.

  @knottie8cb3194d41cf0c46 The main difference is that folic acid is the synthetic form of folate. Folate is what naturally occurs in food. They are a type of B vitamin (B9).
  
  If you have a mutation of the MTHFR gene, your body struggles with breaking down and absorbing folic acid and folate so you need a prenatal with a methylated form of folate as that's the most broken down form (if my understanding is correct).
  
  Folic acid still needs to be converted before it can be used by the body. It seems like a lot of doctors will specify folic acid because as a synthetic, there are studies on it specifically for the decrease in neural tube defects.
  
  To specifically answer your question, no it's not bad to take a vitamin with folate!
