2-door cars and babies

I have a 2 door hatchback Yaris.  I love my car.  LOVE.  But I'm debating how awful exactly it is going to be for hauling baby.  Husband's car is a 4-door, so we at least have one.  Have any of you dealt with a carseat in a 2-door?  Was it miserable, or will I be able to make do?  Tell me of your experiences!

Re: 2-door cars and babies

  • I haven't, but I never would!  It seems awful!  It's hard enough to get my DS in there the way it is... It might be OK for the first year.  But after that, I wouldn't be able to handle it :-)

  • I have a Mustang.... I feel your pain.

We want to trade it in to get a Jeep for me, but it isnt financially feasible right this moment. Hopefully before baby otherwise im going to be in a really rough spot.

When my DS was born in 2012 my husband and I had only our 2009 red 2 door Yaris hatchback.  It was annoying I guess, but totally doable.

  • I have a 2 door car as well, we plan on buying a new more family friendly one around the new year. I don't love my car so I am pretty excited.

I personally could not even think about how much more work it would be to get a baby in and out of a 2 door. Especially as they get older and start resisting getting in and out. Also the infant carriers are kind of bulky so if you are planning on using one would it even get out without really tilting it?

My mother loves to tell me about how she had to get rid of her bicentennial Camaro because my carseat wouldn't fit in the back.

I imagine it would be doable, but unpleasant. You're basically going to be trying to get 10+ pounds of baby and carrier through the door and past the front seat to place them at an angle in the back. It's difficult enough getting my 7 year old quickly in and out of the backseat of my 4 door.

When i was pregnant with ds we had a mustang. I loved that car. I vowed we would make it work. Until i was 7/8 months pregnant and had to ride in the back seat. I got stuck. 2 men had to help pull me out. The next day we went and got a 4 door.
I am glad we did. Now we have a mini van and its pretty much amazing

  • One of my friends has two babies and a two door car. It's not ideal but she makes it work. Two people makes it easier, one can put the carrier in while the other holds the baby.

It's not impossible! But I know they'd rather have two four door cars. If it's not in your budget to get a four door, you'll adapt!
  • We had a two door vw golf for the first 2 1/2 years. It took a little more effort but wasn't bad at all. The click in car seat was really helpful.
  • I haven't had to deal with it but I bet it wouldn't be fun. We have a small four-door and even that is kind of annoying to get the baby in and out of. I would suggest maybe when you buy an infant car seat you just practice with that and see how it feels to pull it in and out of the car (also knowing that it will be heavier with the baby in it). If you really love the car, you could probably make it work.

  • We had one, we traded it in within the first month of DD being born. It's ridiculous and akward.
  • It sucked. We ended up taking the 4 door car everywhere as a family, and I let Hubbster use the 2 door fun car. It was doable, but sucked. It was also a 15 year old Honda Civic, so there were other problems too.

  • I'm not even sure how you'd safely install a car seat without having the leverage. I sweat, curse, and pull muscles getting DS's seat tight enough, I can't imagine doing that leaning over. I'm sure it can be done though.
Oh and also, my son is 31 pounds at 19 months and super duper long and still rear facing. It pains me to think about a 2 door.
Maybe you and DS could switch cars for a few years? Or even better... Go car shopping! <:-P

  • Monte Carlo and 2 kids.. 1 I. A booster and 1 in a infant carseat worst thing ever! But if u have no choice it's doable.
  • I would never ever ever recommend a 2 door car with kids. Heck, my husband has a 4 door corolla and we are trading that in because it is too small in back these days with our daughter.
  • Totally doable. I have a Honda Accord coupe. Because we've been in contract for a house for over a year now (2 different houses now) we were advised not to take out any car loans until the sale went through. We figured we were closing last November and would have a 4-door by the time baby came in June 2015. Fast forward to now and another house later we are STILL be in contract so I now have a 4 month old in a 2-door car. It's more work but you'd be surprised how quickly you get it down to a science. Fingers crossed we should be closing this week and will be moving onto a 4-door. I know for sure I cannot fit two carriers in my back seat because of how far up I have to move the seats.
  • I have a Honda Fit (4 door hatch back) and DH refuses to drive it. I love my little blue nugget and I'm dreading the day we turn it in for a full size SUV :( he drives a 1999 Infiniti QX something or other, and it's got 200k miles, doesn't have a latch system that works with newer car seats, so if I need him to drive us all somewhere, it will have to be in a new car.

I drive a compact car too and absolutely love how easy it is to park and maneuver-especially in the city.
