Product Spotlight: Formula

Breastfeeding isn’t for everyone and science does a damn good job of nourishment too. Even if you are breastfeeding, sometimes you baby may need a little extra. Let’s talk formula.

What have you used and what are you planning to use? Are there particular brands better for allergies (soy, dairy, other) or that have other bonus qualities? Have you found formula easier to acquire or cheaper online or in stores? Give us the pros and cons of what you have, or ask about what you want. Is there other relevant info?

FTMs: when you look at formulas, what’s overwhelming or confusing? Ask away!

Feel free to revive this thread at any time!

Re: Product Spotlight: Formula

  • We didn't end up using formula, but I always recommend having a small amount on hand even if you intend to breastfeed so that if there's anything critical with baby not getting enough milk you have emergency backup on hand. When I had DS it was during the first covid lockdowns here and there was a formula shortage from people hoarding it. I managed to find one small tub at a small little pharmacy in another neighbourhood because everywhere else was sold out. If he'd needed it when he was born I wouldn't have been able to find it in my area in a pinch back then. Since there's another formula shortage now at manufacturing level I would definitely look up which brands are consistently available.

We're planning on breastfeeding, but no one knows exactly how that will go. So DH has been buying one normal size can of formula every other week for the past two months. That way we feel like we aren't hoarding or taking away from others who actually need it right now (ordering online through Walmart so literally ANYONE can buy it anywhere and we aren't taking from stores), but we also want to be prepared in case the shortage lasts and/or we need it. Hoping the baby's okay with normal formula otherwise we'll be donating. We did make sure to get the same brand/kind our hospital uses so there's no switching after birth...we weren't smart enough to think of that on our own but my OB was when we asked for her thoughts and suggestions.

With my son we breastfed until 6 months, but I did have to supplement with formula a bit the first couple days until my milk came in, and at 2 months we had to start doing one bottle of formula a day because my supply wasn't enough for him. The hospital had Similac pro-advance pre-mixed formula when he was born, so we continued to use that. And when we started supplementing we switched to powder and then to Similac Total Comfort because the regular one made him really gassy. Once he was maybe 7 or 8 months old and wasn't having the gas issues we switched to the Kirkland formula and it was WAAAAYYYYYYY cheaper!

@rcgw I know there are a lot of concerns about a shortage, but it sounds like you already have 4 cans of formula? I wouldn't worry about buying too much more! Newborn stomach's are so tiny that depending on the size, a can might last a week or two. And if you're supplementing, a can can last a month once it's open. But the other thing is that you might need to go through a couple brands/types of formula before you find the one that works for baby.  A friend of mine tried almost a dozen different kinds before they found one that didn't bother her son!

I'm planning on breastfeeding but since I have no idea how that's going to go I want to have some formula on hand closer to my due date just in case. Right now on the waitlist for Bobbie formula, so I'm hoping they open up orders before September 🙃
  • I was able to get two sample cans of enfamil at the boutique ultrasound studio today. It came in a cute diaper bag.
  • Any thoughts on the Bobbie formula? My SIL swore by a European brand which didn’t upset her baby’s tummy and it sounds like Bobbie is based off of that.

@mcclanna That's what we're opting to try and start with should we need it. For dairy based products we do pretty much exclusively pasture raised when we can, so it makes sense to extend that to formula.
  • We are planning to use bobbie organic whole milk after a friend told me about it. I believe it is the first USDA certified whole milk, which I like, it is very similar to breast milk, it has a subscription with a discount. Plus, I like the feeding room on their website that gives you some tips on feeding too for breastmilk or formula.
