1st Trimester

5 weeks and traveling to South America

I am 5 weeks pregnant and going on vacation in South America for one week. I’m wondering if anyone has had any experiencing traveling internationally while pregnant. Im also going to be at elevation for a few days and hiking which is nothing new for me as I am an active person.

Re: 5 weeks and traveling to South America

  • Hi there! I traveled internationally twice during my pregnancy - once from 5-7 weeks, and once from 24-26 weeks. Travelling in the first trimester was definitely worse, because takeoff and landing in the plane triggered nausea for me. Honestly, that was the only bad part though. In the second trimester, my morning sickness was fine, and I didn't have any other problems with the travel itself. I'm not sure about the elevation; I did a bit of hill hiking during the second trip, but nothing too high up. However, I did get overheated really easily, so depending on what the weather is like where you're at, it's something to keep in mind!

  • I just got back from traveling at 8 weeks and everything went well! I did take Dramamine on the flight to help me sleep and keep nausea in control on the 8h flight so if you’ve taken it before I define you recommend not skipping that. Also be sure to do research on local hospitals covered by you travel insurance in case of an emergency. Good luck and enjoy your trip!
