December 2025 Babies

What are you reading lately?

It seems we have a lot of readers on here, and I would love to hear what everyone is reading.

Besides the nonfiction books about being pregnant that I'm devouring, I just finished My Year of Rest and Relaxation and I'm a big fan of Otessa Mosfegh's books. Nothing much happens in this book which made it perfect for reading before bed. I'm also listening to Emily Henry's new book (not as good as her others IMO) and I just started the memoir The Mother Code.

I'm interested in reading more fiction featuring pregnant women and mothers of young children that isn't depressing. I'm thinking of reading Perfect Little World by Kevin Wilson again. His book Nothing to See Here about twins that spontaneously combust (but aren't harmed) is also wonderfully heartwarming.

What are you guys reading and any recommendations for heartwarming fiction?

Re: What are you reading lately?

  • I unfortunately don’t have anything helpful to recommend, despite reading 150+ a year.

My DH loves to tease me that all I read is smut. (Which not ALL but a good amount).

It’s mostly fantasy, romance, dark romance, and some fan fiction. (With an occasional classic fiction thrown in).

And the really random non fiction, like timber tax lots or black holes and time warps or antibiotic resistant bacterias.

    My reading makes no sense.
    this is my backup acct.

I like to read a lot of psychological thriller. But I am currently on sports romance.

Just started reading a hockey romance series. It can get slightly sexually graphic at times, but nothing alarming. Author is Elle Kennedy. First book in the series is called “The Deal” and I just started the second in the series called “the mistake”

it is currently picking up off the romance of the first one. :)
  • @KayMayEmmAyy LOVE Emily Henry! I’m on the waitlist at my library for her new book, so no spoilers please, tho disappointed to hear it may be a letdown (my current least fave of hers is People We Meet On Vacation, fave is probably Happy Place). I read the Moshfegh for book club a few years ago now and I think I recall finding it hard to get through but also enjoying it in the end? But that often happens for me, especially with new-to-me authors.

The last few years I’ve been picking books by just browsing the new fiction shelves at the library and grabbing whatever looks interesting, usually with a few romance novels thrown in (the cheesier the better). A selection of fiction I ended up really loving:

    - Shred Sisters, by Betsy Lerner
    - Scaffolding, by Lauren Elkin
    - A Good Life, by Virginie Grimaldi
    - Family Family, by Laurie Frankel
    - Come & Get It, by Kiley Reid
    - Lessons In Chemistry, by Bonnie Garmus
    - They’re Going to Love You, by Meg Howrey

I’ve also been deep into nonfiction pregnancy books, but I totally get the need for some lighter, heartwarming fiction. I recently reread Little Fires Everywhere—not exactly about pregnancy, but it does explore motherhood in a powerful (and not too heavy) way. I’ve also had Perfect Little World on my list, so your mention might be the push I need! For something cozy and uplifting, I enjoyed The Guncle—not about moms, but it has that found-family warmth. Also, a lot of these stories are being adapted now—amazon prime video has had some great book-to-screen adaptations lately if you ever need a break from reading but still want that same vibe.

I've also been seeking out books with pregnant protagonists, in addition to all the nonfiction pregnancy/baby books - I guess I've got a bit of a one track mind these days haha. Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner was sweet, and followed four women's pregnancy journeys. The Lighthouse Witches also had a pregnant protagonist, and was an interesting read if you like gothic horror.
  • @thatbaintforbetty one SMUT my husband gets on me for reading so much of it 😂 I just need a little break from reality and it so happens to be a fantasy romance I’m sorry?!?

I’m reading…well TRYING to read The Last Mrs. Parrish. I keep falling asleep evertime I try reading it. 😭

Maybe reading a book that I can relate to the main character more can help me stay awake. I’ll have to try some of these recommendations!

    This was a great post!

I'm on my 2nd read through of Hilarie Burton's Grimoire Girl. I actually met her on her book tour for this book after just finding out I was pregnant with my 2nd. She was only the 3rd person I told and was incredibly kind and said some sweet words, so reliving the experience and hoping for the good witchy energy to find me again.
  • Have you read Standard Deviation by Katherine Heiny? Not about pregnancy, but it's a great mix of humor and family life. Her writing feels warm and real.
  • If you want something gentler, The Gifted School had some great mom perspectives. A little drama but not too heavy.
  • I loved Great Circle by Maggie Shipman. It’s a real mix of adventure and character building and historical fiction. No pregnant moms; but theme of family is def present. Loved! I also loved Lapvonah!! Have you read that one yet?? Pretty teisted but hilarious. I might read her one about Pirates next which I I heard is also good. Rest and relaxation was fun, and I was so impressed with how diff the style was Lapvonah. I could keep going with Reccos!
