Acceptable max group size for daycare?

edited August 2022 in Pre-School and Daycare
Hello! How many children (ages 6 weeks to 1 1/2 years old) in an open space would you feel comfortable with for day care? Assuming within the appropriate ratio, what do you feel is a good maximum for class size for this age range?

Re: Acceptable max group size for daycare?

  • I think that at this age an individual approach is important, and a large number of children will not be beneficial, in my case, then a group of no more than 6 people is the best solution.

Great question — for that age range, even with the proper caregiver-to-child ratio, I personally feel that smaller is better for quality care. Around 6–8 infants/toddlers in an open space feels like a good max to me. It allows for enough interaction and stimulation without things feeling overwhelming or chaotic, both for the little ones and the caregivers. Quality over quantity really makes a difference at that age! If you're looking to ensure the caregivers are well-trained, you might want to check out Credentia. They offer a certification program for caregivers, ensuring that those working with young children are fully equipped to provide high-quality care. Their customer service can help with any questions you might have about training or certification.

  •
I agree that for very young children, an individual approach is crucial. Too many kids in one open space can be overwhelming, both for the little ones and the caregivers. Personally, I’d feel most comfortable with a group of no more than 6 children in this age range. This allows for more attention to each child and a calmer environment.

Also, for daycare staff, having the right gear can make a difference—things like green scrub caps are practical and hygienic for daily care routines.
