Questions and recommendations around formula feeding!

Re: Product Spotlight: Formula 🍼

  • First off, fed is best. Period. So for those of you with the intention of breastfeeding, if for whatever reason it doesn't work out (and there are numerous reasons), and you end up formula feeding, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that!

I formula fed with my son and there are many pros and cons to it. It can be a bit of trial and error to find a formula brand that baby tolerates well. For whatever reason, they may have a lot of trouble with Enfamil (tummy pains, gas, spit up) but do just fine with Similac. In my son's case, we found that he did best with soy milk formula instead of cows milk formula. The trouble with that was soy milk formula is much more difficult to get your hands on, especially with shortages/recalls. But we made it work, and there are also lots of facebook groups where people sell/exchange formula, which was helpful.

A couple products that made formula feeding easier:

This formula travel container. If we were going out, we'd portion out 2 oz of formula in each compartment. And then we'd bring along a big water bottle and his feeding bottles. Made it easier to mix up a bottle on the go: https://a.co/d/3xlSyJs

And I highly, highly recommend the Baby Brezza formula machine. It's essentially a keurig that mixes up warmed formula bottles in seconds. It's pricey but SOO worth it. People often sell these on FB marketplace so if you end up formula feeding, look on there for one. https://a.co/d/34gJwCl

  • Did the pediatrician say anything negative about the formula machine? They seem neat, but I saw an article on here that said doctors don't recommend them because of concerns that they may not be consistent in formula distribution.
  • We never even thought to mention it to the doctor actually! It does force you to switch out the funnel every few uses to prevent clogging (we had a few of the funnels for that reason). I never seemed to have issues with it. You feed based off of baby's hunger cues anyway, and not "x" amount of ounces. So even if it didn't dispense the right amount of formula, if he was still hungry after finishing a bottle, I would feed him more until he seemed content. Of course, you kind of have to guess how much more to make - formula feeding is not the most cost effective option, for sure!
