Babies: 9 - 12 Months

9 month old but behind on a lot

Our LO is just about 9 months old. He is not crawling, just scooting on his belly, and does not pull himself up to stand. He will stand if we hold him up or he’s resting against something but he would never pull himself up to it. He coos and gargles to make noises and he used to babble but not so much anymore, just a lot of grunts - no mama, dada, baba, Gaga, etc.

he also cannot grasp the idea of feeding himself. We put food in front of him and he just pushes it around but will never lift it to his mouth.

is he behind on these milestones or am I just going crazy?

Re: 9 month old but behind on a lot

  • It sounds like he could just be on the slower end of normal to me, but I highly recommend an Early Intervention consult for peace of mind! It’s free and we have needed PT for my daughter and speech for my son and they were amazing. See what your ped says and ask for a referral, or you can call yourself. If he is “behind” enough he can qualify for certain services free of charge, and even Medicaid in some instances.

My LO is 11 months old and not crawling either, but thankfully the parenting groups I go to have said "Some babies skip crawling and go to walking".
Also, he doesn't really do more than baby babbling, etc.
I was with "learning/development" and also seeing professionals to see if maybe he was autistic--"Why is he so far behind?!!"
And I got tired of them pressuring me to pressure him. I got very tired of people telling me he is behind. This parenting group helped me see that babies go at their pace, and these milestone lines don't mean every baby.
My mom told me my cousin didn't talk until he was 3 y.o. and he is a doctor now, in hospitals.
So, take the pressure off yourself, take the pressure off your baby. Do keep trying, but relax about it and if people get on your case (like professionals that need babies to be behind in order to justify their jobs) about your baby being behind the milestones, not all babies have to be on those lines.
And sometimes, those who don't, can still be doctors.
    Take it easy ☺
  • Hi. What type of engagement do you do during your playtime? I thought my baby was falling behind but it wasn’t until I actually gave him that little push to show him how certain things were done that he actually started doing them. When I was showing him how to crawl, I would prop my up on his hands and knees and start off by doing the hand movements. Once I noticed he was comfortable pushing himself up and slipping the ground, he started to show more signs of crawling. So then I would put a toy or snack in front of him and move his legs for him to show that he can do the movements to get to where he wanted to go. Few days later, he was following the dog around. It takes time and babies are learning a lot in such a short period of time. Today we started learning how to clap and the type of emotions towards it. So I am clapping his hands for him and yelling “Yaaaay baby!” And he gets all excited. I would randomly yell “Yaaay!” And he showing he knows to clap when he hears it.
  • My first baby did not walk until he was 15 months! He too was behind in milestones. At the time I didn’t care bc he was my first and I was completely in love and knew this time was short lived. My partner was worried. But everything worked out. He’s so smart and so him now. Just keep checking in w his Dr. And go with your gut.
  • I’d don’t stress about it, babies grow at their own pace but also be sure to encourage and engage with them on the skills you’d like to help them develop. You got this mama!
  • So I know this has been a while since this has been posted but I just want to say a few things. My baby isn’t interested too much in crawling. It’s totally fine. She likes trying to stand more. Everyone is very surprised when I tell them my 9 month old is feeding herself finger foods.

I want you all to know your baby will develop when they’re ready. I still have trouble accepting my baby isn’t crawling. It drives me crazy sometimes. So whenever I feel a bit down about it, I turn on Bluey, season 2, episode 47: Baby Race. I hope it helps all of you excellent parents that are doing an amazing job ☺️
  • it's different in babies but you can try herbal remedies for immune system and metabolism. kids magic tea by secrets of tea can help
  • My little one wasn't crawling at 11mo because of lack of interested. We had try many exercises, toys, mirror, etc. Nothing seem to work.
We went to see a physio and they showed us some simple transition positions to practice 10min at home everyday. My child was crawling enthousiastly about a week later. I was really surprised by the quick results.
  • hi , my baby 9 1/2 months it’ll be 10 months March 22 and he will stand up If we hold him up he does not crawl yet but I believe he will by the end of March or next month. He does not scoot but he will always roll 360 on his belly. Some babies develop at their own pace so don’t worry yet . I know the nurse practitioner said when my baby was six months that he was not with himself up and we will pull him up after getting a diaper change after getting wiped up he would turn his head to the side and not keep it straight and they wanted to refer him to get some early intervention help but a month and a half later he was doing it with a lot of work from us. I will make sure I have pulled him up every time after you guys diaper change or from when he was in a laying down position.
