Scheduled C-section

Can anyone tell me what to expect with a scheduled c-section? My first one was NOT planned and was very traumatic for me. Are they going to let my husband stay with me while I’m being stitched up or will he go with baby? How long before they’ll let me go home afterwards? And what is the likelihood of experiencing complications following a 2nd c-sections? TIA.

Re: Scheduled C-section

  • These are awesome questions to ask your doctor. Other peoples experience may or may not be similar.  Hospitals have different protocols on how things are done.

  • From what I’ve read I think scheduled c sections are generally a lot more chill as long as there are no complications & baby comes out fine. Which is to be expected with a planned delivery. Skin to skin and all that is now common. But it will depend on your hospital. And I think a 3 day stay is standard but things could’ve changed. I hope this birth experience is much better for you!
  • I have mine next week, but from my midwife walking through the process it sounds way calmer. I’ll be able to sleep the night before, get prepped in a calm manner. Heck I’m even getting bloodwork done at my last check up a few days beforehand to get it out of the way. They’ll do delayed cord clamping and skin-to-skin, all the good stuff.

At the end of the day, ask your doctor. As others have said, each hospital had their own protocol.

I had a scheduled c-section at 34 weeks due to vasa previa (had been being monitored since 32 weeks and they were afraid to let me get past 34). My husband was allowed to be in the OR with me once they did all the surgical prep. I’m pretty sure he was able to be in there while they were stitching me up but I honestly can’t remember if he was in there at that point (he left briefly while my son was transported to the NICU just to make sure he got settled but he was able to come back into the recovery room with me). I had the c-section on a Monday went home by Friday. I technically could have gone home Thursday but my insurance covered an extra night and my son was still in the NICU so I was in no rush to be separated from him any more than I already was. Also I was still in a lot of pain at that point. The recovery wasn’t easy but I also pushed myself too hard the first day. Not sure if this is helpful but I hope this is a better experience for you this time around!
