I like that it has both video and audio, and that the video display is its own device instead of connecting to an app on a smart phone. That way when we have someone babysit, they can easily use the video device instead of installing the app onto their own phone.
You can also turn the video off and have it be audio only, which is nice when you don't want a glowing screen lighting up the room while you're sleeping at night.
You can also connect additional cameras to it, which we'll be doing for baby #2 since we still have a monitor in my son's room.
The picture is really crisp and you can easily zoom and change the camera angle from the video monitor itself.
We also have this mount which makes it easy to attach the camera to the crib: https://a.co/d/jm6LGya
We had this one but we really only used it once baby was in their own room. Baby slept with us in our room until 3ish months and then went to their own room. I was worried at first about no video, but neither of us wanted to buy one of the wifi cameras for security reasons and we couldn't find a good one in our area with its own screen. The audio only worked great for us until we got 2 kids in a room together, then we did switch to video.
This may be a silly question, but how important does a monitor seem in a small house? I feel like there's no way I wouldn't hear her crying. And the video thing just seems like something I'd be tempted to compulsively check, and if I'm actually concerned I'll probably get up to check on her regardless!
@butterflyhunny Not a silly question at all! Babies can actually be pretty noisy in their sleep, and sometimes what sounds like crying is them actually whimpering/whining in their sleep. I would double check on the monitor whether he was actually sitting up crying or just laying down and “sleep crying”. You probably won’t want to risk going into their room to check and potentially waking them up, especially during those early months when you spend hours rocking them to sleep! Also, for me, during the first year when there were many overnight wake ups, when I did sleep, I slept deeply. And having the audio was extra mental reassurance that I would in fact wake up to his cries, even though he was right across the hall from us! All that being said, choose what is best for you! You can see how things go the first few months when baby is in your bedroom, and then decide once baby moves to their own room.
@butterflyhunny@watermelonsunshine You’re welcome! The first few months are a crash course - you’ll learn quickly! But there is no one size fits all. Always trust your instincts and do what feels best for your baby and your family!
We love our Nanit. Very pricey but you can be pretty far away and still connect, whereas with our first monitor I couldn’t really even go out into the yard or garage. I liked having it on my phone because it’s always on you anyways rather than having an additional thing to keep track of and charge.
The app can run with sound on in the background so you can still use your phone. Plus my husband could also check it at the same time. We tried a cheaper WiFi monitor and it worked so poorly we realized it was worth the price after our friends raved about it. Will be using it again for our second!
Do I really need a monitor with all the extras like breathing/movement tracking? I feel like I’d get more anxious watching every stat. Anyone else feel this way?
