Product Spotlight: Bottles/Warmers/Sterilizers 🍼

Questions and recommendations!

Re: Product Spotlight: Bottles/Warmers/Sterilizers 🍼

  • We started off using the Philips Avent glass bottles, which I really liked! They're sturdy and hold up well in the dishwasher. But we had to stop using them once my son started daycare because they didn't allow glass bottles (makes sense - if the teacher accidentally drops it and it breaks, it's a huge hazard). My son was colicky and had CRAZY spit up, so I decided to switch to anti-colic bottles. We used the Playtex Baby VentAire ones. There are less parts compared to other anti-colic bottles, so they were easier to clean!

One thing to note about bottle feeding is you often have to try various nipples with different flow rates to see what works best for baby at the time. I found that the "newborn" nipples were way too slow for my son and he'd get frustrated. Using a nipple with a faster flow rate worked better. So it's a bit of trial and error.

We didn't use a bottle sterilizer, just hand-washed bottles daily and ran them through the dishwasher every so often.

If you are formula feeding, I HIGHLY recommend getting a Baby Brezza formula machine. It works just like a Keurig, but it dispenses warmed formula bottles for you in seconds. It is SO worth the money. It will save your sanity for those middle of the night feeds.

  • Anyone get a warmer for breast milk?

I was gifted a warmer/sterilizer and honestly only used it once. It just wasn't convenient for me, since I breastfed and had minimal bottles. It ended up taking up space I didn't have. But I know other people like them.

With my first, I tried to not use a bottle warmer, but if she wasn't getting the milk straight from the source, she wanted it HOT so we had to get one. You don't need anything fancy. I bought two different ones - one more fancy and one cheapy and the cheapy was great and easy to use. I liked the simplicity better than the expensive one.

For sterilizer - you really don't need to sterilize often so I got one of those microwave sterilizer's (I think the avent one?) And that was all you need.

For bottles - don't invest in that many! Get a few different varieties (one packs and samples are great for this) And find out which ones your kiddo likes. Mine only liked MAM. I am sure kid #2 will be different.
  • We haven’t used a bottle warmer or sterilizer before. We usually have hot water going in the morning (tea, coffee, oatmeal), so we’d just put the bottle or bag of milk in hot water  to warm up. I know there were times with my first where we could not move fast enough for him and a warmer might have been faster.

I will say, it was nice to have a good to go cup for when we were on the go. It seemed like our Yeti go cup would stay hot for so long. I’d have one full of hot water and could just add our bag when it was getting close to feeding. Also, if you are out and about most restaurants or coffee shops are happy to fill it up with hot water, too. (That was for when I was exclusively pumping because our little one was not able to latch and not into trying.🙃)
