Product Spotlight: Breast Pumps and Accessories 🥛

Let's talk breast pumps and any other recommended accessories related to pumping

Re: Product Spotlight: Breast Pumps and Accessories 🥛

  • Okay, all you STM+, share your advice! I formula fed with my son, but my goal for this babe is to take another shot at breastfeeding, or exclusively pump if we have issues with latching.

What pumps do you like? Is it worth it to spend the big bucks on anything?

I didn't pump much with my son because we pretty quickly switched to formula, but I had the Zomee Z2, which was one of the free options through insurance. It was fine for the short time I used it! And I purchased a pumping bra to make it hands free, which was useful.

But in general I feel clueless about pumping products, so any advice/recommendations would be helpful :)

  • Shew. I am waay too familiar with pumping due to working full-time with all three and exclusively pumping with my middle guy who refused to latch. (This doesn’t include the very rough six months of grind with my first. Nursing has mostly a hard and stressful journey for me.) All that to say, I’ve used the Medela In Style Advanced (with on the go tote), the Spectra (S2 I think) and the Willow hands free pump. I liked the Spectra the best. I was trying to use the Willow during my exclusive pumping journey and I don’t think it’s really made for that. I had trouble with it latching and getting to the point of feeling fully empty (and would often need to pour it out and reattach because of the volume I had going). For those working or exclusively pumping, a hands free nursing bra a must. A haakaa or a hand held pump can be nice to have on hand even if you don’t need to pump for the times you are still full after nursing or need some relief (illness, baby dropping a feed, transitioning to solids, etc.). I had two pumps with my second baby since you get a free one via insurance with each pregnancy and it was such a treat to leave my pumping gear at work and have a set at home (especially since he was my exclusive pumping baby). That being said, multiple sets of flanges, tubes, etc. are nice to have on hand. Most insurances will cover replacements of these parts, too. (I used Motiff Medical and they even reminded me via email when it was time to restock and took care of that for me, which was nice). I will say, being able to track your output via a separate app or an app through your pump is so nice (especially when I had goals for storing milk, etc.).

I’m sure there is more to say, but I’ve written too much already. 🙃
  • I'm looking into the pumps offered through my insurance and considering the BabyBuddha 2.0 double portable. It looks like it has pretty good reviews especially for what I think I'd need, if anyone has specific thoughts I'd be happy to hear them though! I do see the Spectra gets great reviews, but the one through my insurance looks like it has to be plugged in and IDK if that's ideal for me.
  • @routtymama That is all such helpful info, thank you!!
  • I still have my spectra from my first, but I really wanted a wearable for baby two as well. I got the momcozy m5 but now I am reading that the motor goes out a lot...I really hate how personal a pump is but they are so expensive and you can't easily trial them!
