Maternity coats and cold weather clothing

Hi all, I did a search and didn't find much on maternity coats. I live just outside of Boston and in need of a very warm maternity coat that ideally is under $100. Does anyone have recommendations? I plan to continue on my long walks with my dog for exercise this winter and even after baby is born when I'm feeling ready. I need a warm coat to be worn when is cold and snowy/rainy.

I'm finding many maternity stores/clothing don't yet have many winter weather items yet like thicker leggings and sweaters, long sleeved dresses and full sleeved tops. I want to buy winter and not have to spend money on both fall and winter. It's starting to already get into the 40s overnight.

  • When I was pregnant last time (had DS in January) I just did lots of layers. I actually bought several open front sweaters from regular women's departments that I layered short sleeve and long sleeve maternity shirts. It worked out well because then I could still wear the sweaters after I delivered and even the following year when I wasn't pregnant. As for a coat--I actually wore a pea coat/trench boat that I just didn't button the bottom on and wore a longer scarf under it to cover my belly. I walked my dog up until the day I delivered with it and then by the time I felt up to walking him again after delivery, I could easily fit into all of my other winter coats and button/zip them up. Still have weight to lose, but coats would zip up and close for me to still stay warm.

I do know that I have seen maternity coats on Old Navy and Kohls before---but they can get pricey.

  • I got a wool pea coat at Motherhood Maternity in 2012. Not sure if they'd have them now though.

  • My friend was pregnant last winter and I lucked out because she just let me borrow her coat. It's Liz Lang (or whatever) if that helps you at all.
  • Motherhood Maternity (we have one of their outlets in the area) has been selling sweaters and cardigans.  Not sure about coats though... I live in a fairly warm climate.

  • When i was pregnant with #2 i was due in January and knew i would need a winter coat.  I got this one from Walmart.  It's nothing fancy but it's actually pretty warm.  I live in Wyoming so you never know when you're going to have really cold weather.  i was definitely glad that I had it.  plus it's less than $20 bucks.

A few years ago, I picked up a few jackets like this one on sale. This one is is $99.50. Down jackets are super warm plus really great for wet weather. I would get one in a large or extra large if you have a big baby belly like me.

I'm a dog walker for one of my jobs and I'm always outside, this year I'm buying men's clothing, like the large and XL sizes, so I can just layer up without disturbing the bump. This way when the baby is born too if it's too cold outside and I'm wearing a wrap I can zip a jacket over both of us! (Plus it's cheaper than "real" coats.)
  • Destination Maternity is currently selling peacoats and bubble coats as well as light jackets. I just went there yesterday. I live in NC where the weather tends to change rapidly.
  • Thredup.com
  • I have a wool coat from Target that I got on clearance my last pregnancy. I also just bought a down coat from motherhood maternity which seems pretty warm. I got it brand new at a mom to mom sale for like $15. But I've seen the new ones in the store and they're under $100 and I know H&M has a down coat for like $60
  • Also live outside Boston and going to try to make it as long as possible with mens coats and lots of layers. Hoping this winter is better than last....

  • I got a maternity hoodie from Kohls online, it isn't very warm but if they have hoodies, they might have coats too! I didn't look because I live where it's warm.
  • H&M has at least one wool blend coat under $50 that just had a waist tie, which should be good over an expanding belly with some layers and a scarf for additional warmth up north. I ordered one today (I live in NC, where winter is shorter and milder but it still gets pretty cold at night, which is when I usually take my long walk with the fur babies).

  • Like @thisusername said, I would consider buying a man's wool or down coat. Most maternity coats aren't that great for the super cold weather. I had DD in March, so I was big for the coldest part of winter. I did have a maternity coat from Motherhood Maternity, but I found my husband's down jacket to be warmer and more practical (he wasn't a fan of me stealing it, but oh well). And if you buy a practical men's coat, your SO, friend, dad, etc can have it when you're done with it (or bundle up you and baby under the jacket).
  • lurking from march board, i am in Canada and its started getting bit chilly here, i was planning to buy this. https://makemybellyfit.com/products/bellyfit-panel. Its only 60 bucks and free shipping in Canada, This way i can still wear my winter coat.

  • I'm really hoping that I can get by with one of my own coats. I recently went through and got rid of ones that were too big, but pulled a few back out hoping that they'll be big enough for my belly. I'd really rather not spend the money for a maternity coat that I'll wear for probably just December-early Feb. We'll see! I've had friends tell me that they just bought cheap-ish coats in larger sizes. I saw that Zulily sale today but there are other things I'd rather spend $100 on than a coat that I'll wear for 2 months..but they are cute!
  • I live in Canada and it gets so cold in my area. There is no way I could go without a heavy winter coat and I already can't zip mine up which is extremely depressing. But the prices for maternity coats are insane, so I've been looking on EBay used. I haven't found anything yet but the options are much more affordable. You should check it out if you are looking!

  • Check out Zulily.com today. I saw a section that was specifically for maternity coats. It looked like they had some good deals

I did, I just wore a hoodie and didn't zip it. Then I wore just one of h's Columbia fleece jackets over a hoodie and was fine. Pregnant = more warm than usual. I survived a northern Midwest winter like that

Zulily just posted a sale for "snow day maternity" that has a lot of coats! It's hard though, because you can't try them on to get a feel for their snuggliness.

ETA: wow, I was really late to the game - sorry!!
  • Thanks for the tips !! I am looking into your ideas!!
