March 2025 Babies

Weekly check-in 1/27

This will probably be the last weekly Check-in I post here (anyone else can feel free to start it) as I'll be using the private group more leading up to our birth month! I'll keep checking in for any requests to join the private group so don't be shy!

    FTM/STM/TTM+: STM

Baby is the size of a (an): head of romaine lettuce

    Team blue/pink/green: pink

Upcoming Appointments: GD endocrinologist and midwife tomorrow, growth scan on Thursday

How are you feeling?: very anxious. I’ve been so MIA, I couldn’t keep up with work an everything. I felt I only had energy for work, I’m currently on a sick leave right now and with good timing since my pregnancy is now higher risk.

I was diagnosed with GD and I’m on insulin for fasted sugars that wouldn’t budge. But now I’m worried about my placenta since baby is a normal size, just petite (18th percentile) but her stomach is small. So I’m just like panicking over placental failure over here. I’m now being sent to hospital for weekly scans and my care is transferred to an OB, then back to midwife when baby is born if all goes well.

So basically, I’m a ball of nerves and I’m not sure what any of this means. This is VERY different than my first pregnancy with my 100th percentile baby that was overdue with no GD or complications. I also feel like I don’t have all the answers right now on what this could mean, what are the chances, etc. so on Thursday I hope to speak to the OB doing my scans and midwife tomorrow. It also doesn’t help she is moving more faintly these days, so I’m just in my head right now. The information will help me rationalize and stay off Reddit! Lol.

Rants/Raves: raves go out to my amazing care team and for being in very good hands with the endo, OB, and my midwives. Also big rave to my hospital for not giving me a hard time over my sick leave.

    Questions: any other GD friends?!

GTKY: Have you ever met anyone famous?

I met a local Toronto celebrity named Sean Desmond! He had a huge hit called “shook” when I was in the 8th grade and we were obsessed with him (it’s a banger and he now is making a comeback on the Canadian music scene if anyone wants a fun listen, lolololol). I worked at American Eagle in high school and he shopped there, I was his cashier. He was so nice and kind when I asked him if it was him that end of the transaction. He gave me a nod and a wink, the 8th harder inside me fainted! Haha. My husband is a huge fan of the Canadian band, the Tea Party and I have met them with him a bunch of times.

in 2023 in NYC, i made eye contact with John Hamm outside of a cafe! We locked eyes for a minute and I realized who he was and also internally freaked out ahaha.

And in 2022, I SWEAR I walked past JVN in NYC again ! It was like I was left in their trail of warm, fair dust! I’m obsessed with them.

    FTM/STM/TTM+: TTM

Baby is the size of a (an): bunch of Celery

    Team blue/pink/green: green

Upcoming Appointments: I'm supposed to have a regular OB next Tues but they called to change it and idk when it was rescheduled for

How are you feeling?: still nauseous. Heart burn is kicking up again. My kids are disrupting my sleep more than usual

Rants/Raves: my sense of smell is in overdrive and contributing to my nausea.

    Questions:
Did I ask what pump everyone is getting?

GTKY: Have you ever met anyone famous?
My mom won meet and greet tickets to Josh Turner back when I was in high school. And I saw (but didn't meet)  David Beckham in the Rome airport lol

@dunder_mifflin oh my you've been through it lately! I hope this upcoming appt and growth scan can give you good answers. It's so hard not to go down the rabbit holes of all the bad complications while trying to find information.
And I feel you on pregnancies being completely different and not knowing what to expect. This one for me is so different than my first 2 I feel like a ftm again
  • @dunder_mifflin I had diet controlled GD last pregnancy. I didn't want to transfer care so I usually tested fasting number 3x and went with the lowest number. Most mornings 1 out of 3 was in-range. I also falsified those by eating in the middle of the night. I did eventually tell midwives and they said to stop. They had me trying a bunch of different things to keep my fasting number in range, it was annoying and I wanted to just fake it.

This time around I have a different midwife. My baby measured 13th percentile at 22 weeks and I haven't had another ultrasound since then. But I plan to have another one done before delivery because my first baby measured the same at 22 weeks and I didn't have another ultrasound and she was born at 5th percentile at 38+5 because of pre-eclampsia. Different complication this time, but I can't help but worry. So I'm trying to be more honest this time around and my fasting number has been around 110 but my midwife isn't concerned - very different from the last practice I was with- she's been saying stress, lack of hydration, and other factors are likely causing my out-of-range fasting numbers and everything should be fine since I'm otherwise diet-controlled. I know I can choose to transfer care. I just haven't done it yet... I was supposed to have an appointment last week but I got sick and my next appointment is next week.
  • DD / Weeks + Days: 34 weeks + 2 days // March 10

    FTM/STM/TTM+: first time mom

Baby is the size of a (an): butternut squash or cantaloupe

    Team blue/pink/green: baby boy

Upcoming Appointments: Friday 1/31 for 34 week check up. Only one more before we start going weekly. We went in last week for a last minute checkup because I was having terrible vertigo but baby was fine, hoping to get another measurement to make sure he’s not in the 20th percentile still

How are you feeling?: exhausted, anxious, excited, not fully ready. My baby shower isn’t until 2/16 and we don’t yet have a car seat and a few other essentials. It feels like we still have so much to do.

    Rants/Raves:
rant: I wish I started calling pediatricians offices earlier to pick one, I have a few appointments set up for the next few weeks but it’s also my last few weeks at work and just cramming it all in feels like a lot. Also all pediatricians in LA have a yearly concierge fee on top of billing insurance that is paid out of pocket which is just bananas and only something that we have to do in LA. My OB also has a concierge fee
rave: magnesium spray on my back/hips and calves before bed, I need to order more. I’ve also been seeing a prenatal chiropractor/acupuncturist weekly which has been great for my hip pain and overall discomfort. It’s out of pocket and eats into my work day but it’s very helpful. She’s also a mom of 5 so I ask her questions about everything too.

Questions: When does everyone start their maternity leave? I’m starting at 38 weeks which is quickly approaching but when weekly doctor appointments start and I have other baby related things to handle during the work week I feel like there’s never enough time to get all my work done and I’m terribly behind.

GTKY: Have you ever met anyone famous? I live in LA so yes but it happens less than you think. I often see people but just let them live their lives because they’re normal people too. Elizabeth Perkins (Cecelia on weeds) lived a few houses down from my parents for years. I once saw Jared Leto in the grocery store.

  • @ksd20 I got the spectra (the blue one) through my insurance and then I think I’ll buy the Elvie or momcozy portable with my registry discount after birth depending on how my feeding journey goes. My mom is a lactation consultant which is going to be KEY in feeding my first baby.

@eclaire90 that concierge fee is wild to me! Because I'm taking unpaid FMLA (besides short term disability) I'm waiting until delivery to start my leave (which I did with my first 2 pregnancies as well). Luckily my work schedule is very flexible so I've been able to schedule around patients.

I've only heard great things about Spectra pumps and a lot of positives about the mom cozy too! I have a 6 year old old medela PISA and a 4 year old willow. Surprisingly my willow turned on and charged when I pulled it out the other day. Gotta try the medela. One of the moms in my F19 BMB is an IBCLC with aeroflow and she said there's lots of new pumps coming out in the next few months so hopefully I'll be able to wait for her reviews and see how my old pumps are working before I need to decide on a new one

  • @ksd20 I totally know what you mean! It’s been a bit stressful lately, but I’m trying to stay positive and not panic. I think I’m just a bit traumatized from having a March 2020 baby when everything was turned upside down before DD’s arrival and I’m reminding my nervous system that these changes the past few weeks are not COVID! Haha.

    also David Beckham 😍
  • @allfacestheoaks wow, i COMPLETELY understand why you would want to fake the numbers! I considered the same (I considered eating in the middle of the night also, lol!) because I adore my midwife team and it’s the same practice I had my first baby at.

The care here is my midwives office is affiliated with a hospital, and the hospital has a whole outpatient gestational diabetes clinic. If you’re diagnosed, midwives refer you there to see nurse, dietitian, endo, etc. they report to midwife.  the endocrinologist there was looking at my sugars and diet, and no matter what I did those pesky fasted numbers were too high so I started night insulin. That automatically puts me in higher risk category and it’s outside my midwives scope of practice so I transfer to an OB for birth, then back to midwives after baby is born for after care. I’m kind of sad about all of it, but they will be involved after so it’s okay. I think the OB is where I have to be right now.

it’s actually freaking me out that they want to do weekly ultrasounds, makes me feel like something is wrong that they are not explaining so I hope I get some answers tomorrow. If not, I’m trying to be as zen as I can. DD Was 8lbs 15oz so I expected an even bigger baby this time, I’m thrown for a loop! I think we use different blood sugar measurements in Canada, but fasted numbers here should be between 4.0-5.2, and I’ve been 5.6 like consistently. I’m titrating insulin up and the endocrinologist was happy with my other numbers this AM.

I am glad you are having great care :) the insulin to me has been great and I hope this just means baby continues to grow :)
  • @eclaire90

i understand the stress! It’s a lot to manage, we also feel behind and are panicking and organizing our house. We have to fish out all of our baby items we shoved at the bottom of the stairs 3-4 years ago and reorganize our whole storage room To fit our Peleton bike since it’s in the office/guest room, which we are turning into DD’s room ASAP. Baby will have DDs nursery, which we can easily convert back to full nursery so I’m not stressed about that. But we have SO MUCH TO DO AHHHH! I just picked up a barely used uppababy bassinet for the stroller for 1/3 the price (we didn’t have one for our Cruz since we had a March 2020 baby and were too afraid to leave the house until she was 3 months, what a time it was!). I also sold my halo swivel bassinet last pregnancy since I didn’t want to store that massive thing and made a profit! I bought a barely used one again for 1/3 the cost of a new one also the other day, so phew - at least we have that going for us.

I’m on sick leave right now because I pay into my sick benefits and honestly I couldn’t work anymore without my Vyvanse. I was making mistakes and that’s not good when you work with vulnerable youth and families in child and adolescent psychiatry. My mat leave will begin when baby is born, I’m taking 18 months and so I won’t return to work until September 2026, which is wild! But I also know how fast it flies by. I did 18 months with DD also and I absolutely loved being off with her, but was also so happy to talk to adults again - ahaha.
  • @dunder_mifflin OMG 18 months!!! What a dream. I’m taking 12 weeks post birth unpaid leave and I have no job security because I’ve only been at the company since end of may 2024.
  • @eclaire90 noooooo! I honestly wish you all got better maternity and parental leave benefits!! We dip into our “employment insurance” we are all federally mandated to contribute to, but we have it for us if we become unemployed, sick, or need parental leave. It will be a massive financial hit for us still - my hospital tops us off for 6 months, but after I will be taking on like $418/week for a year. However companies legally have to hold our jobs for us to return to. We saved for it and are in a better financial position this mat leave - I’m grateful I can take the time off. Toronto is an expensive city 😂

@dunder_mifflin I've had Canadians in all of my BMB and I'm so jealous of your leave!
I've also been keeping an eye out for an uppababy bassinet because I got a stroller 2nd hand with DD and then hardly used it because she too was a 2020 baby who didn't go anywhere lol I just live in to rural of an area that there aren't many local
