Private ultrasound not what I expected. Any advice?

Hello ladies! I would love to know if anyone had a similar experience and if I should brace myself for a negative outcome. I visited a pregnancy center because I had concerns from some red spotting (random) and random daily brown spotting (usually in morning and night), as well as being exposed to different stressors. I went for an abdominal ultrasound and was under the impression that I was about 7w4d since my last abdominal ultrasound. I thought the same and was told that I was probably two weeks behind but I had a gestational sac and no yolk sac. However, for with the more recent appt, I was told that my gestational sac was still growing but still no yolk sac or embryo appeared on the screen for the abdominal ultrasound. The tech said that she couldn’t give too much medical information since again, she is not an OB but stated that’s possible that I’m still just super early or that the embryo may be so small that it’s still not showing up on the abdominal scan. She stated that I definitely needed to look into getting blood work, which I am still waiting on after labs last week and possibly could have better results with a transvaginal ultrasound which I won’t have until 1/8 since that is supposed to be 8w for me.

Has anyone else encountered this before? Is it possible that I do have a blighted ovum or had a MMC and she just didn’t have the heart to tell me or couldn’t professionally. Any advice is helpful and I’m sure I can’t stress anymore than I already am when I’m trying not to. Thank you and hoping for the best for us all!

  • She probably can't tell you anything because she is not an OB. Unfortunately, you'll probably just have to wait until your OB appointment. I don't think they're allowed to give you any medical information like that at private ultrasounds.

Be prepared to maybe wait even longer for a definite answer though, because there's a possibility that the OB won't know anything definitive without further scans/ tests either. At least that was my experience. I was pregnant early in 2024, and when I went in for my 8 week ultrasound, I had similar results. The ultrasound tech didn't say much, just that I looked like I was about 6 weeks instead of 8 (I don't think she was allowed to say more). Afterwards, I met with the doctor, and she said that the only thing that showed up was a gestational sac. She said that it could be just because I was not as far along as I thought, or it could be a missed miscarriage. At that point in the pregnancy, they couldn't be sure without further testing. I was told to come back in a week (or two, I don't remember which), and they would do another ultrasound to see if the baby was growing normally. I also had blood work done. When I came back, it was determined that I had indeed had a missed miscarriage.

I truly hope that is not the case for you. I know how heartbreaking it is. While I was waiting for results, I read stories from other women who had similar first test results, then found out that it really was a healthy pregnancy, just earlier than they thought. So there is still hope. I know that this is going to be on your mind the whole time until you meet with you doctor, but try not to despair.

  • I’m so sorry for your loss. Never easy to hear and the internet only drives us mad. I’ve seen so many mixed reports but trying to remain cautiously optimistic. Even taking into consideration that maybe I developed a tilted uterus or my endometriosis is something to factor in with more recent symptoms. Thank you for the words of encouragement. I’ll be sure to update after my appointment tomorrow.

  • Unfortunately I did have a MMC and should’ve been around 10w this week but God had other plans. I actually started bleeding the day before my 1st ultrasound with the OB. The issue may be deeper than we think from my other health issues. Praying for a safe pregnancy for the rest of you 🙏🏾
  • So sorry for your loss 😔💔🙏

  • So sorry for your loss. I’ve had 4 myself and it’s never easy to cope with. Sending u love and hugs and hope to hear about your rainbow baby one day🤍
  • Honestly, you should wait for your OB's confirmation before accepting defeat, if that's an appropriate term to use. Please don't give the impression that I'm just giving you false hope. Who knows? Anyway, I wish you all the best and send you hugs and love.
