1st Trimester

Bleeding and pos tests

Hi guys, I am 15dpo (3w5d gestational) and have been testing positive since 12 dpo with progressively darkening tests. On the evening of 12dpo I started spotting light brown/pink which progressed to red blood on 13 dpo. This has continued on/off since then, is lighter than my period but have cramps and worried it might be a chemical pregnancy… each time I’ve tested I’ve expected reducing lines/negatives but it’s getting stronger still. Very confused!! Anyone else experienced similar?

Re: Bleeding and pos tests

  • Darkness of a line is not quantities, its qualitive - you possibly could have a subchronic hematoma.  If concerned call your doctor office's nurse line.

  • Hi, thanks for your response, I spoke to a doctor on Friday, they said test every 2 days, should see the line going fainter or getting a negative if it’s a chemical pregnancy/non viable! I know it’s a waiting game at this point, just desperately searching for answers I guess! 🤦🏼‍♀️
  • So PG tests are qualitative, not quantitative.  You can keep testing every few days to see if you suddenly start to get no line because your HCG has dropped below the test quality level.  However, an easier approach would be if your doctor ordered your HCG quant tests for you to see what your levels are.  Get a test, 48 hours later test again, see if the number is doubling (indicating a progressing PG) or not (indicating a problem).

Honestly, I'd call your doctor and see if you can demand the HCG tests.  If you aren't comfortable with that, if you're only like 18 dpo, and you don't get a negative or VERY faint test by like Wednesday, I'd call your doctor and request the tests.

  • The spotting and cramping would be about the time of implantation bleeding. I agree that home pregnancy tests are qualitative so you can’t compare the darkness of lines, your best bet is to check your quantitative hcg once and then 48 hours after. Hope that helps and that everything works out!
  • @knottie28bbf9c0a3977802 It's understandable to feel confused and worried given your situation. Spotting can occur for various reasons during early pregnancy, and while it's common to have some light bleeding, especially in the first few weeks, it’s crucial to monitor your symptoms closely. The fact that your tests are showing progressively darker lines is a positive sign, but cramping and changes in bleeding can raise concerns.

Many people experience similar situations where they had light spotting but went on to have healthy pregnancies. However, each case is unique. It's always best to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice based on your specific circumstances. They may recommend an ultrasound or blood tests to check hormone levels and ensure everything is progressing as it should.

Take care of yourself, and don’t hesitate to reach out for support from friends or online communities who have been through similar experiences. You're not alone in this!
  • Hi all,
Thanks so much for the responses, means a lot that anyone has taken the time to offer reassurance and advice! I’m in the UK and was told on the NHS they don’t offer anything this early in a pregnancy unless there’s ongoing health issues/history of miscarriage - I will call my GP and push for more support next week (I’m on holiday atm which is terrible timing) if this is ongoing!

For now, I’m still testing positive, 4weeks gestational and 17dpo, still slightly spotting light brown. I’ll keep testing every other day and see what happens, definitely experiencing pregnancy symptoms so here’s hoping 🤞🏻
  • @knottie28bbf9c0a3977802 It’s great to hear that you’re staying proactive about your health during this early stage of your pregnancy. While it can be frustrating to navigate the system, advocating for yourself by reaching out to your GP is a smart move. Early support is crucial, especially if you have any concerns.

The positive tests and symptoms you're experiencing are encouraging signs, but monitoring the spotting is important too. Keep listening to your body and don’t hesitate to seek out additional support if needed. Remember, you’re not alone in this journey! Wishing you all the best as you continue to monitor your situation—stay hopeful! 🤞🏻
  • Hi I am experiencing the same symptoms, what is your outcome as of now??
  • Hi, I had an early assessment scan today (I should now be 6w3d), and they didn’t find a yolk sac. Waiting for results of my blood tests which hopefully will be more definitive. I’m still very much playing the waiting game so can’t offer much reassurance unfortunately :( I feel very much that I have had a miscarriage, although am still getting positive pregnancy tests. Sending positive wishes to you and your baby x
  • Update: my pregnancy has been confirmed as non-viable. My hCG levels were 621 on Friday and have only risen to 720 today (Sunday). I am going back on Tuesday for more bloods but I’m now bleeding and cramping again so it’s likely I’m miscarrying now. I hope other people in a similar situation have a happier ending 💜💜
