  • @bluecampanula, it went kind of fast didn’t it?

    Upcoming Appointments: Induction tomorrow!

How are you feeling?: Okay! Got diagnosed with pre-e again, but not severe this time (yet). Getting induced at 37 weeks (aka, tomorrow). Looks like it might be quick again - did a cervical check today and was 5 cm dilated and 80% effaced. Hoping it won’t be quite as precipitous or wild as last time. And I don’t have to be on a magnesium drip which I am thrilled about.

Rants/Raves: Looking forward to like…2-3 days from now!

Questions: What holiday gifts are you asking for for yourself? I don’t need slippers, a robe, or loungewear and that seems to be the only non-baby focused postpartum ideas out there. Need to give my ILs some ideas or it’ll just be another pair of slips 😬

  • @wednesdayschild yes, it's been such an insanely busy few months that this pregnancy has been almost an afterthought. And though I have some weeks to go yet, I'm feeling a little flustered that I don't have the free time to get everything done I'd like to.

    Due date/weeks + days: 12/25 🎄36 +6

Upcoming Appointments: weekly now. I've realized I've only met half the CNM team, but there's one I really like, and who made me feel at ease since the beginning. Originally I thought I'd start switching it up by now to meet them all, but I think I'm just going to stick with her - and I'm hoping she'll be the attending at this birth.

How are you feeling?: starting to get more uncomfortable. Baby hasn't dropped so I've still been able to move around fairly normally, but now my belly is just so big I can tell I'm leaning back while walking

Rants/Raves: I used our registry completion discount and black Friday sales to order pretty much everything off our list this past week, so I'm excited to feel a little more ready that way. I've been hesitant to really set up the baby stuff though because I know my 2yo is going to immediately claim them for her baby dolls 😆 I used those discounts to replace her car seat also, since it will expire in the next year anyways and besides the registry discount, I figured I'd feel better being able to use that seat for 2 kids instead of just one... but now it's cold and icy and I can barely fit in the garage beside the car, so installing will be interesting

    Questions: holiday gifts: @wednesdayschild
I usually have some hobby/craft things on my list. Though this makes me realize that no one has asked me for my list yet this year. And my birthday isn't that far after Christmas. My mom said recently she had something for the baby, but it's definitely not anything off the registry so who knows what surprises we'll get!
  • Yay! It did go by fast I can’t believe it’s December now!

Wishing you a quick delivery today @wednesdayschild!

How are you feeling?: feeling good but definitely uncomfortable and ready for this baby!

Rants/Raves: yesterday I started my maternity leave 🥳

Questions: anyone else nervous about visitors getting the baby sick this time of year? are you taking any preventative measures?

as for gifts, I asked for an instant pot lol I really like cooking and don’t use a slow cooker at all so want to try to make more stuff in it/like that

    How are you feeling?: Tired

Rants/Raves: I keep having insomnia.... I'm up for like 2 hours in the middle of the night, and it's really zapping me especially with my two year old the rest of the day. But I'm thankful for all the holiday distractions this time of year. I also think my biggest motivation for birth is gonna be getting rid of this constant heartburn🥵

Questions: How do you all stay motivated to keep up with the water intake, exercise, and healthy eating? I'm finding it harder and harder the later I get, but I also feel like this is the time that really counts!
  • @nj_newmom we LOVE our instapot... Especially for some easy freezer meals post baby. I must use that thing at least three times a week. Mostly for making rice or bone broth. I haven't brought chicken broth in ages b cause there's always some in the freezer from the instpot. I hope you get one!

@himalchica For the motivation, I mostly pushed through. I had GD so I felt like I needed to keep my healthy eating habits. For the water intake, it helped for most of my pains, but that was the worst to keep up. As for exercises, I mostly did pregnancy ball exercises at that point, so I just repeated my routine a few times a day. Mind you, I had stopped working at that point, so I luckily had more time to rest (always tried to nap in the afternoon at the same time as my one year old). You've got this!!! You're almost there!!

Baby boy is 9 days old today.
Upcoming Appointments: Here, until baby regains their birth weight, you are followed by a nurse. In our case, baby was really quick to regain his birth weight so we already got our "leave".
How are you feeling?: I feel like the recovery is going well.
Rants/Raves: My one year old is quite sick since last night. She is so miserable. It's a challenge to take care of her with her contagious sickness while also taking care of the newborn. Pretty sure we are sadly all gonna end up sick even when I try my best to limit contagion...
    Questions: No
  • @froggerblue that's rough! Hopefully baby boy will get some good antibodies from you and be fine. Though I hope you can be spared also. I got the flu shortly after one of my babies was born, he was totally fine, but I was sure wiped out flat. I had a hard time staying hydrated and my MIL ended up holding baby in a separate part of the house and just bringing him to me to feed every couple hours while I otherwise laid around in bed.
  • @himalchica the insomnia is the worst! My 2.5 yo keeps trying to skip naps now too 😱😭 I thought for sure last night I would sleep well since I also hadn't napped and was totally worn out.... but no. It took me forever to fall asleep and then I was awake for a few hours in the middle of the night too.

If I feel like I haven't been getting enough water I put a little bit of lemon juice in a glass of water. For some reason that always makes me chug it down. Or I've been sipping some spindrift nojito while cooking dinner (or after dinner because I'm trying to not snack and have heartburn, and also be hydrated without chugging a ton of water just before sleep and then having to get up a million times in the night...) . I try to keep the majority of my intake plain water, but I think having that little bit of flavor helps to get a little extra fluids in.

Upcoming Appointments: Weekly on Wednesdays. I don’t have a 40 week appt scheduled because that Wednesday is Christmas and it didn’t occur to me to just pick a different day? 😆

How are you feeling? Mostly good. Baby dropped several weeks ago, so I’ve had way less heartburn and feel like I can breathe again. Lots more pressure on my bladder though!

A bit of insomnia, but I would probably be waking up anyway because my 2.5yo wakes up during the night.

I made a joke to my husband the other day that every time someone asks how I’m feeling, I kind of want to say, “I’m so constipated! You would not BELIEVE these hemorrhoids!” But instead I just say, “Oh, pretty good!” 😂 I’m taking iron and have had some rough days because of that, but currently managing okay.

Rants/Raves: I still have quite a few things I want to get done before baby comes, but it’s so hard when I can barely keep up with the basic tasks of dishes, meals, laundry, showering, taking care of a toddler, etc. I feel like I’ve had the same few things on my to-do list for the past three weeks and just never get to them.

  • @wednesdayschild I think only my husband has asked me for gift ideas 😂 but I askedd for some film for my Polaroid camera, flat back earrings, or an art print I’ve had my eye on for a couple years but never bought! I also like to ask for consumable gifts so I don’t collect too much clutter, so I often ask for things like coffee, tea, soaps, lotions, etc.

@nj_newmom I’m a little concerned about sickness, but I just plan to take some common sense precautions. If someone knows they are sick, they should not come over. Everyone should wash their hands before holding the baby. That kind of thing. For me, I feel like there’s always going to be some level of risk but I don’t want to be overly anxious about it.

@nj_newmom I actually won't attend huge Christmas gatherings this year. My choice is mostly because all the family gatherings are more than an hour drive away and I'm not comfortable driving around so much with such a young baby.

Since I have a one year old that goes to a daycare, we have runny nose after runny nose each week. This week is a bit scarier because she has a gastro and it's super contagious. There is a lot of face and hand washing going on in the house, and we change the baby on the bed instead of the changing table (like my daughter) to limit the contact to a minimum.

Last year, my daughter was three months old during Christmas and to limit contacts, I was baby wearing most of the evening.
  • I've got pretty much everything ready to go at this point. Car seat installed, bag packed, Christmas presents wrapped, stocking contents labeled, Christmas/NY letter written & card designed (just waiting to drop in baby's photo & stats for printing), stamps and address labels printed and in a folder... so I should be able to hand it all over and snuggle with a newborn.

BUT the one thing we don't have ready is a name for this child. And I'm starting to panic. We didn't have one ready with the last baby either (we were team green that time), but this feels different. Maybe because I want to be able to print our holiday/announcement card right away. And can't do that without a name lol.
  • @wednesdayschild, what about consumables/experiences? I personally would love a postpartum massage right about now—some time away from baby to relax and feel like an individual.

Due date/weeks + days: our lo was due 12/4, scheduled for induction on 11/29, delivered on 11/27 after my water broke the night before

    FTM/STM/TTM+: ftm

    Team blue/pink/green: blue—Finley!

Upcoming Appointments: two week pp depression screening for me on Wednesday, on Friday we have another weighted feed with the IBCLC for Finn

How are you feeling?: pretty ok, actually! My tear is finally healing, we are getting more sleep now overall (only 4 hours last night, but 7 the night before!). The little man was having a lot of trouble latching deeply, and coupled with about 3L of fluids during delivery, he lost 18% of his birthweight. It was a scary time and I felt so lost. I am still emotional about the possibility that I may never make enough breastmilk for him, but he is gaining weight and doing better.

Rants/Raves: feeling very disorganized and simultaneously impressed with all of you that have holiday and baby preparations done! I still have to find time to write thank yous and find a way to get holiday pictures taken for our announcement. We don’t have family in state, and my dad, who was the only person able to visit and help, got a cold and left early 😔

otherwise we are slowly finding our way around triple feeding the boy and trying to still find time to feed ourselves 😂

Questions: do any of you have experience with latching problems and/or pain with pumping? I have a little chomper, but his latch has gotten better over the last week! Still not sure it’s deep enough, but he has a fairly small mouth. I’m considering trying some silicone flange inserts even though lactation seems to think my flanges are the right size. I just don’t think I should have the kind of pain I’m experiencing if that’s the case.
  • @lauraa44 I am not a great pumper, my babies never really took a bottle much, so it's not something I've really invested time in. BUT I remember hearing somewhere regarding nursing latch that if it's hurting, it's not a good latch even if technically it looks like it should be. And vice versa? Or something like that, so take that quote with a grain of salt 🤪 but yeah, if you can, I would probably try something different with the flanges. My memory feels extra blurry these days, but I think I remember sometimes needing to stop and readjust while pumping - it was like a feeling of being rubbed raw.
  • @lauraa44 I did experience latching difficulties with my first. My advice would be to watch for hunger cues and take your time to get a good latch. I hurt myself because I was rushing because the nurse was too pushy. I was still at the hospital and baby didn't latch properly and she was rushing me to unlatch baby quickly and I ended up with a bleeding nipple that took weeks to heal because the nurse was too hasty.

If you are able to notice the first hunger cues, you should have plenty of time to latch and unlatch until you get that "good" latch without baby getting too upset to feed properly.

Also, for the pump, except if your nipples are already bruised, it shouldn't hurt to pump. It can be a bit uncomfortable the first few pumps, but that feeling should go away quickly. Also, yes I would probably try another size of flange if the one you have don't provide a painless experience. You can look at the form of your nipple at the end of a pumping session to see if the flange needs to be bigger or smaller. If the flange is the right size, it could be the setting of your pump that are off.

I can try to help if you have any specific question to what I've proposed, but I am not a lactation consultant. I just went through a bit of an ordeal to get my daughter to breatfeed. So that about the knowledge I have. Hopefully this will be helpful to you in some way.
