Baby gets so upset he almost faints

Hey guys !
So I have been dealing with something that has had me so worried and in fear that my poor baby one day will just fall out on me if I’m not careful. My son gets upset and he cries and when he gets really upset and cries hard he goes silent and stops breathing, his lips turn purple and his face turns pale and I just have to hit him on the back 2 good times like he’s choking go to get him to take a breath, then I just hold him and cry a little because what if I didn’t react? What would happen ! I can’t even begin to imagine ….
I don’t know if I should be upset or stern ?!
I’ve never seen this before, I have delt with kids all my life but never this . I don’t know if I’m doing the right thing or how to fix it or how to correct this . I just don’t know and it’s just Absolutely so scary… any recommendations?!!!

Re: Baby gets so upset he almost faints

  • Is there a trend in what he’s getting upset about when it escalates to this? How long does it take for him to get to that state? And what is the typical reaction to his tantrum (I.e. intentional ignoring method, attempt at connection and regulation, more stern approach, etc.)? Also what is his communication level? Is he able to say a lot of words yet and communicate well or is there still a struggle to understand what he’s trying to say?

You could ask your doctor about it, but I've seen two similar cases. The one I'm most familiar with is my baby brother. He was getting really angry suddenly, stopped breathing and turned blue, then once he passed out, his system seems to do a reset and he was breathing again, and was quickly back to normal. The worst period for that was when he was about 18mo. The phenomenon stopped on it's own. I think it was called breath-holding spell. At the time, we were told no to intervene in the first minute or so, as the baby should start breathing again within that minute. I think past that minute, you have to administer CPR, but I'm not sure, so better check with a doctor. It never went past the 1 minute mark with my brother.
