Politics/election discussion thread

Not sure if we’re allowed to discuss politics here but I’m pretty nervous about being old and in my first trimester after this election result. I don’t want an abortion but I also don’t want to die because of pregnancy complications because the doctors can’t intervene. It doesn’t feel like a great time to be pregnant in America.

  • A quick search finds this.....
So here ya go. Good luck! 👍

"Yes, in a situation where a mother's life is at risk during pregnancy, doctors are legally allowed and ethically obligated to intervene with necessary medical procedures, including those that may terminate the pregnancy, to save the mother's life; this is considered a "life of the mother" exception in most abortion laws, allowing doctors to use their reasonable medical judgment to make such decisions."

  • Miscarriage care (D&C) and care for ectopic pregnancies are protected rights in all 50 states, even states with the strongest abortion laws. So, I think people need to stop letting fear take over since the election. The election will have literally zero to do with womens health care. It's up to all states to make their own laws.

Also, those 2 cases cited above do not get into the full details. The mom with twins died from taking an abortion pill without monitoring and the ER she wound up in was definitely negligent. If any provider denies care or doesnt provide timely care (like in this situation) that is medical malpractice. Which is the leading cause of death in this country, by the way. Has nothing to do with abortion laws- those are just the cases the media highlights to get people in an uproar. In all reality, we should be in an uproar all the time given all the medical negligence in our country.
  • It’s very disturbing to me that we are having a discussion about abortion on a baby app?! Like obviously we aren’t here because we want to abort our babies! Especially if we’ve had trouble conceiving or have had miscarriages. It’s just really inhumane to discuss this in this community! Do your research into those cases cited! There was definitely malpractice at fault! And there is no state that has laws against miscarriage care!!
  • @kmbeit People with very wanted babies absolutely have "abortions." TFMR is an abortion. People have ectopic pregnancies where doctors are not able to act if baby has a heart beat even though it is an obviously nonviable pregnancy and the mother risks rupture that can lead to serious health consequences. A mother with a very wanted pregnancy may face a cancer diagnosis where treatment would kill the fetus, but if she doesn't get treatment she may become metastatic and die from the cancer.
The thing about abortions, and health care decisions in general, is that they are nuanced. Which is why they should be between a patient and their doctor. Not dictated by politics/laws.
  • @kalesix3 @knittingmama4 I wasn’t referring to ectopic pregnancies or situations where the mothers life is in danger. I’m talking about making comments about not sure about being pregnant because of the political situations we are supposedly facing. Like just because we just had an election now people aren’t sure about being pregnant?! Like basing your want of a child off who is or isn’t president. I’m not turning my face away from it. I realize it has its place when medically necessary. And for the record I’m not foreign to miscarriage, I’ve experienced it. And do your research, the southern states and Texas do not have a ban on miscarriage care or ectopic pregnancies etc. Not trying to sound rude, just was voicing my opinion because everyone else was posting theirs.
  • The bottom line is, providers WILL be more wary of providing care for even medically necessary abortions because there are so many different situations with different circumstances.
THAT is what people should be fearful of. The line has been blurred.
I’m so thankful I live in Minnesota where care has actually been expanded. I’m tired of seeing piece of shit people have children and abuse them etc. but by all means let’s perpetuate more of that by eliminating choices 🤨
