I failed my 1hr glucose test by 3 points yesterday. I am scheduled to go for a 3hr test on Monday. How common is failing the first test? Is it likely I’ll pass the 3hr? What happens if not?
It's a screening, so the cut off is typically lower than needed. They want to be sure they don't miss anyone that truly has gestational diabetes. I know many people who have had to do the 3 hour, and we're just fine. Do you have any signs or symptoms of gestational diabetes? (Although some people have no other symptoms, so sometimes it's a toss up)
I failed my one hour (by a lot) with my first pregnancy and then passed the 3 hr test with flying colors! It’s definitely possible.
If you do end up failing the 3 hr, they will want you to monitor your blood sugar and treat with diet or medication. I know some people who have had to do this and it’s definitely an inconvenience but also necessary to make sure you and baby stay healthy until delivery!
I failed my 1 hr test yesterday for the first time😭. My # was 151. So now I have to take the 3 hour and I'm going to postpone it as long as possible while I try some supplements and altering my diet a little in the meantime. You're not alone @lolamcarr
@lolamcarr You can fail 1 of the blood draws and pass for gestational diabetes, I believe you have to fail at least 2 of them to get officially diagnosed. I would say you are passing, especially with how low your 3hr is.
@karlee05 The hormones that cause insulin resistance in pregnancy will worsen over time the further along you are in your pregnancy. So I would recommend not postponing taking the 3hr for too long as the longer you wait the more likely you might be to fail.
@karlee05 Would they have any option of doing at-home glucose testing? For my first pregnancy, my midwife let me borrow a finger-prick glucose monitor, and I did tests first thing in the morning (8+ hour fast) then 1 hour and 2 hours after meals for 3 days. My OB office accepted that data in place of the normal sugarloaded test
@noortle, I am going to call tomorrow and see what other options I have. The fast is the part I want to avoid. I haven't gone 8 hours without eating since finding out I was pregnant. That includes the middle of the night😫
@lolamcarr it's important to know that failing the first test by a small margin is quite common. Many women experience similar situations during pregnancy, and many go on to pass the longer 3-hour test. The 3-hour test is designed to provide a more comprehensive assessment of how your body processes glucose.
If you do not pass the 3-hour test, it doesn't necessarily mean there’s a serious issue. It may simply indicate that you need some additional monitoring or lifestyle adjustments, which can be effectively managed with guidance from your healthcare provider. They will help you understand the next steps based on your results.

@karlee05 I did pass! The 3hr test is no fun. My doctor’s office told me I had to do it within 2 weeks of the 1hr test, & with the thanksgiving holidays they didn’t have any availability to schedule me, so I actually had to go to a Labcorp which consisted of driving almost an hour by myself to a WALGREENS for testing! I was definitely nauseous the first hour after drinking the glucose but it mellowed out & I felt okay. Eat something as late as you can.. I had a pack of crackers before going to sleep around 10pm the night before. I also tried to eat “clean” the weekend before (my test was on a Monday) but also drank a pineapple lemonade AND rootbeer the day before & passed (sugary drinks are my guilty pleasure). I really hope you pass!! Dieting would be no fun in general, but especially this time of year with the holidays.
@lolamcarr I'm so glad you passed! I decided to take the 3 hour test next week (waiting for my Fresh Test to arrive in the mail). I don't eat or drink much sugar so I feel like I can eat fairly normally, but will be extra careful the 3 days leading up to it. It was either take the 3 hr test or monitor at home for 2-4 weeks (which includes an 8 hour fast every night!). If I'm worried about one fast, I'm certainly not doing it for 2-4 weeks! Praying I pass and I can put this stress behind me.
@karlee05 Just remember it's not just sugar that causes issues with GD, but rather all carbs, and simple carbs especially. Things like bread and lots of grains can actually have a higher glycemic index than just pure sugar. I'd recommend skipping anything with bread, rice, tortillas, etc, and limit your carb intake to mostly veggies if you can. Since we just had Thanksgiving here I hope you skipped the stuffing and mashed potatoes!
@lizzzy217 Yeah, I know. The funny thing is, the standard medical advice tells you to eat at least 150 g of carbs for the 3 days leading up to the test...which only turns to sugar, so that doesn't totally make sense to me. Other than the fact that they don't want the glucose drink to shock your system.
