How to tell your job you're gonna be a SAHM

I'm going to be a stay at home mom and I need advice on how to tell my employer.  I'm 26 weeks right now. My plan was to tell them at 2 months out (when they want to know my maternity leave plans by), but now 2 of my coworkers are are quiting in that time frame. It'll be a big deal if I leave too. Do I tell my employer early to help them plan or wait until I had planned? I'm scared something will happen and I'll be out of a job. Irrational? Any advice would be great! Side note, I work for the State of ND not a small company.

  • I would recommend telling them earlier so they can plan — Especially since they will be looking to hire for that time anyway, it will be more appreciated if you frame it as “here’s the deal, how can we work together in these next few months to make the transition smoother” rather than “actually I’m not coming back, sorry.” I was working as an in-home carer before I had my first baby and I told the family at 8 weeks because I wanted them to have as long as possible to find a good replacement. Obviously every situation is different but it helps to look at it from their POV — they’ll be unhappy to lose you, sure, but they won’t be mad that you’re choosing to stay at home and raise your baby! Employers just need to prepare as well.

  • I told my job 1.5 months prior to baby’s due date. I helped with interviewing my replacement. They also benefited from not having to offer maternity leave.
