How often are you giving urine samples at your appointments? I have done 1 this entire pregnancy and with my previous pregnancies I swear I gave a sample at every appointment.
I get one every appt but I think sometimes it depends on your provider? I did dual care my first pregnancy with an OB and midwife, and my midwife tests every appt but my OB didn’t.
@farmwifemimi, so you're in the same boat as me. I only did one at like 10 weeks pregnant. The reason I'm curious is because midwives don't require the glucose test because they check your urine for protein every appt. I failed the 1 hr test and now am trying to avoid the 3 hour because the fasting alone is going to make me sick. Not to mention the 100 grams of sugar (I use the fresh test) and the 3 hours of sitting in the waiting room starving. I'm dreading it. I wish there was another approach, especially since I barely failed the 1 hour test.
I've had a different provider with each of my pregnancies and only one of those had me give a urine sample at every appointment. If you have the same provider, maybe they've changed their stance since your last pregnancy.
@karlee05 ah got it. My doc sent me to do a 3 hr glucose test from the get go vs the 1 hr one first. I could think of better ways to spend time, but I packed snacks to eat as soon as the last draw was over and worked on my laptop to pass the time. It actually took closer to 2 hrs since you do the first one right when you get there. Feel you on the drink and wishing their was another way.. definitely didn't feel great after. Wishing you luck!
I think testing the urine for protein is an indicator of pre-eclampsia. I've never had my urine checked for glucose or ketone unless the sample was sent to the lab.
If I failed my 1 hour, I was going to ask about a glucose monitor to check levels at home, instead of doing the 3 hour. I knew I wouldn't be able to handle the fasting part. It sounded miserable.
@luckyduck42 I talked to the nurse today and she said monitoring at home is an option but your first finger prick of the day is right when you wake up and they expect that # is to be your fasting #. Apparently most pregnant women don't eat in the middle of the night? Must be nice🙃. And they would want me to do that for 2-4 weeks. If I'm worried about one 8-hr fast, I'm certainly not signing up to do it for weeks. So I'm going to suffer through the 3 hour test.
