Newborn freaks with poop and gas - sleep deprived

This is my second baby, but my first did not give me this hard of a time. Our 3wk old keeps screaming when she is trying to poop (not constipated) or when she has gas. She won’t ever settle in crib, bassinet or even pack n play bassinet when I try to have a break to sleep. Anyone experience this?! Does it go away in a few weeks??

Re: Newborn freaks with poop and gas - sleep deprived

  • Hi mom,
This happened to me with my first and now my second. When we got home baby was sleeping 4-5 hours of sleep at night and doing well, then by 1st month she was screaming to poop and pass gas and noticed a change in color of her poop.  Pediatrician put me on a diet of no dairy, no butter, onions, garlic or gassy veggies. Only allowed to eat salmon, rice, avocados, banana and a gallon of water a day to increase breast milk. It’s been 3 weeks since I last saw her pediatrician and baby is doing a lot better, not crying to poop or pass gas, getting 5-6 hours of sleep at night.

  • If you're breastfeeding, then my guess is similar to the above comment, that it's related to something you're eating that she's sensitive to. Top guess would be dairy-sensitivity.

Our pediatrician recommended probiotic drops for the baby & it made a huge difference!
  • For my LO it turned out to be dischezia which the pediatrician said he would grow out of and its gotten better in a couple weeks.
  • Im a FTM, experiencing the same thing with my LO. She’s 3 weeks old & she cries every time she looks like she’s pushing poop or gas. I’m breastfeeding, so will try the suggestions in the comment section to alter my diet. Thank you!
  • We had this experience and our lactation consultant recommended me to cut big sources of dairy—no added butter, cows milk, or cheese. It helped our baby a LOT with gassiness. We also started bicycling her legs more and stomach massage to help her learn to get out gas. I still eat dairy baked into things and avoid big sources of dairy though. Hope this helps. Her poop never changed colors so it didn’t indicate a dairy allergy but more of an intolerance.
