2nd Trimester

Allergic Asthma in Pregnancy

I’m hoping someone else might have experience of this because I feel like advice has been frustratingly vague.

I had to take a test for allergic asthma (triggered by cats) last year and it showed pretty clearly that I do have it. I’m hoping to visit friends abroad before my third trimester, but they have cats… I’ve asked my midwife (I had read that some allergies can be worse in pregnancy, although I’ve never had very severe asthma symptoms before) but she didn’t know about it and told me to speak to my doctor. My doctor also sounded unsure and essentially said it would only be a problem if I had to take steroids (which I’ve never had to before) before booking me for another allergy test.

I’m torn between playing it really safe and just going and enjoying a last visit before the baby arrives. My partner thinks we should just go and, if I start to feel like I’m getting bad symptoms, stay away from their actual house. I’m nervous but aware that I might be overly anxious because this is my first baby and I don’t fully know what to expect 😅

Re: Allergic Asthma in Pregnancy

  • I have allergy induced asthma - mine was pretty severe before I became pregnant but finally got it under control with an injection medication and the right inhaler. I’m continuing with all my previous medications but my doctor recommended I add in Zyrtec and Flonase a couple weeks ago because I started to have some flare ups. Nothing terrible though.
My doctors have all said my meds are ok because the most important thing is for the baby to get oxygen. I just need to stop Zyrtec for at least a week once I have the baby because it messes with milk production.

I definitely would not get another allergy test while pregnant or do anything that would risk you needing an Epi pen. But I think if you take some preemptive Zyrtec and have an inhaler on hand, hopefully you should be ok on your trip. My doctors (OB, allergy and primary care) all recommend me continuing with my inhaler because it’s localized - in case that makes you feel better if you have to use one even a steroid one. And like your partner suggests, if things are bad, you can stay away from the house.
    Good luck!!
