Names!

Has anyone chosen a name already? Want to discuss some of your ideas? Anyone doing a Christmassy name?

Re: Names!

  • Here are some of our name ideas for our baby girl. Her big brother’s name is Felix, so we want to make sure they sound good together.

    Violet (currently our front runner)

    Jemma/Gemma

Maya (I like it on its own but don’t know if it goes with Felix)

I also have a few middle name ideas but nothing I’m sure about in combination with the first names.

    Cecilia

Emanuelle or Noelle (if we want to go Christmassy)

  • For a baby girl, I prefer Nikita.
  • @missa_lyssa I think Violet Emmanuelle sounds good to my ear. And it also sounds good with Felix. Still, that's up to you!!
  • @missa_lyssa, Felix is so cute! And I think Violet goes well with it. I also know a little Gemma who is so sweet, but I think you’ll spend a lot of time correcting spelling if you go with Jemma.

For other Xmas-y middle names: Holly, Joy, Natalie? Maybe not with Violet, except for Joy.
  • We’re team green and have settled on a girl’s name - Alice Scott (it’s kind of alliterative with our last name, which we like; Scott is my husband’s middle name/our first has my middle name; same style as our first).

For boy’s, we are kind of at an impasse with three different names:
William Oswald (would have been our first’s name if she had been a boy; family name on both sides; Oswald West is a meaningful place for us)
Thomas Eugene (family name on my side; Eugene is where we met & husband’s grandpa’s name; initials would be one of my husband’s nicknames)
Ethan James (my husband really likes Ethan and I’m OK with it; James is a family name on both sides - his dad/my grand; same initials as our daughter; alliterative with our last)

Also toying around with William Eugene, but I care about initials and don’t love WEE - am I overthinking that? Also, would love any opinions to help break the impasse.
  • @wednesdayschild I love how meaningful all your names are! I think the initials WEE would bother me too, even though I like the sound of William Eugene on its own.

Of your other three options, I think my favorite is Thomas Eugene, maybe because Eugene reminds me of the movie Tangled. 😁 I like Ethan James too.

  • @missa_lyssa I like those names, I think even Maya goes well with Felix. The nice thing about the 2nd is that you're not really "locked in" to one tiny style box. Yet. lol.

@nken20 I wish I had a clear preference at this point, thinking about names has me wanting to cry half the time 😂

@wednesdayschild you have a good list! We have a grandpa Eugene also, so that makes me biased to Thomas Eugene 😊 I go back and forth on how much initials matter, with girls there's always the potential they'll change their last name one day, but with boys what you give them is generally what they'll have. In my own life, I think the only real time initials have been used is occasionally signing legal forms as an adult? Otherwise maybe it got up for fun on the playground once??? So I wouldn't think it's the absolute worst and most likely way to get picked on. WEE could be laughed at as pee by kids, but once you get past that decade of life it can also be more fun - like the sound you say on a theme park ride. But I've had the same thoughts, some of the first names I was tossing around for this boy would have made the initials COD or CAD and especially together all I could think of was Hook for disneys Peter Pan 😆

  • My current naming struggles are that we know too many people and DH doesn't want to double up with anyone, ever. Also, the boy name we had picked out last time he has now vetoed because it was a character's name in a show he watched with the kids and that connotation has changed his feelings on the name 🙄 Personally I think ones own child will overwrite any previous small connotations, so maybe we'll revisit this later.

Also, I like some very English names but I don't like their nicknames and I'm afraid my tongue will get tired saying those names as much as I would for say, a chaotic toddler. 🤪
  • @bluecampanula, the park call is a great name test. We were at the splash pad the other day and a dad was shouting: “Xerces! Xerces! Five more minutes, Xerces!” 😂😂🫠
  • @missa_lyssa Violent Emmanuelle or Gemma/Jemma Noelle or Maya Noelle have good combinations and sound to them. I love the name Cecilia, but it doesn't have the same ring with the first names you've  chosen, especially the double "ah" sounds at the end, lilr Jemma Cecelia. I love the name Felix, though and then those would work well with Felix.

@wednesdayschild Your names are all so meaningful, which I love! Family names or names that tell a story are all so special.

@bluecampanula I completely sympathize with your husband. I feel like regularly veto names because too many kids we know have them, or a character didn't like has them or something. I remember with our first thinking, wow, you never realize how many people you dislike until you start trying to name a kid! 😂

@dogmama629 I think the most aggravating part is that he doesn't give any meaningful contributions to the discussion though! Just says no - or maybe it's that I've also said no to the, like, 2 he's suggested so he's given up 😂
  • @bluecampanula oh my gosh! My husband does that, too!! It's so frustrating! I will share 50 names, and it's just, no, no, I don't like that one, that one is dumb....😬 And then I'll ask for his suggestions and he just says, I don't know. Or one or two (that usually are terrible! 🤪). I don't know what this kiddo is going to be named!

We are team green, and very happy with that, but the naming part is tough. We are very comfortable with our name if it's a girl. But we have a three year old boy, and love his name. It was a special family name and we felt confident immediately with it when we were pregnant before (also team green then). But now we are having the HARDEST time with a boy name. It feels like we had our one boy name picked out and we don't have any others... I'm always so jealous of people with great stories or personal connections for their kids names because I love that.

We are planning to use Lynn at the middle name for boy or girl. It's my middle name, and also my mother's and is special to us. So figuring out first names to go with Lynn as a middle name for a boy that we both like has been very, very challenging for us.

I like Walter, Frederick, Simon, Hugo, and Isaac. Of those my husband only really likes Simon. He likes Desmond and Warren, which I don't really like. Any thoughts from anyone? Or success stories of hating all the names while pregnant but eventually loving your kid's name on them!? 😂
  • For our first, we tried to find at least three names of both gender and we chose one only after meeting baby at the hospital. About two weeks before the birth, we ran the names and checked if the baby reacted to any we chose. The baby did reacted to a baby girl name in particular. In the end, we chose that name when she was born, and it fits her so well!!

Although we know this one is a boy, we plan on doing the same thing.
  • i am due in december 27th and my baby girl is gonna be named marissa
