Vaccines

I just got my tdap vaccine and I have a prescription to get the RSV vaccine next month.
Is anybody else getting the RSV vax?  This is for the baby more than me, right? Should hubby get the RSV shot?
The flu shot will be coming up here soon and I'm not sure when I should be getting a covid vax again? I haven't had one of those in ages because it isn't very common where I live. We haven't heard of a case around here in like 2 years so I don't even know if it's worth getting it?

Re: Vaccines

  • @mitchip I just got my RSV today. In the UK this is the first year that they have given it to pregnant women. They only started on Monday this week!

I wasn't expecting to get it today but I was at the hospital getting my 28 weeks bloods done and asked if they could give me the vaccine since they had posters everywhere. My hospital is a big women's hospital with a antenatal clinic that runs every day so they let you do walk ins for some routine things.

The RSV is supposed to be more for the baby. Here babies get an RSV vaccine at 12w but by giving the mother the vaccine we can pass antibodies to give them some protection in the meantime. There was a long article on the news about it the other day. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx2ed29v415o

I'm also going to get a flu and a covid vaccine when they are available. I've had tdap vaccine already. I work in a inner city secondary school ages 11-18 so I usually pay for a flu jab because I get so much exposure to all the germs going round so I'm very happy to be given all the vaccines. I'm also quite conscious that baby is going to be born in the middle of flu season and I've got two older kids at school so there is a good chance baby could get an illness very early on.

  • I got my tdap last week, going to ask about rsv next appt. Definitely more for baby, although being pregnant you’re more vulnerable to a lot of things anyway so I assume it benefits mom too. I’ll also get the flu shot when it’s ready and I’m overdue for a Covid booster.

Also going to ask the pediatrician about baby getting an rsv vaccine too, I don’t know what the standard is here since it’s such a new vaccine. It first became available when my daughter (17 months old now) was a baby, but the clinic only had enough vaccines at the time for preemies and newborns, she was several months old and didn’t get it.

Like @cornichonmam I’m also nervous about having a newborn at the start of flu season! My son will be in school and the past couple years we’ve been sick with something every month in winter, it’s horrible. Anything that can protect the baby, sign me up.

  • @etnyah I'm not sure what the newborn schedule is either. I got confused with the rotavirus vaccine, which was new what I had my first son.

I've had a quick look online and there is some recommendations for infants from the American CDC but I can't find anything else.
  • I got the tdap at my appt on Monday and will get the flu shot and rsv shot next appt (3 weeks).
  • @mitchip hubby doesn’t need RSV unless they are older or themselves immune compromised. Xo
  • No Vax at any point for any of us. I went down the rabbit hole and never came out. No regrets here about it.
  • Got DTAP, n rsv and week later flu/covid.  DH got all except rsv.  Got my DTAP a week before 4 confirmed whooping cough cases at the high school I work at.
  • I got my RSV and flu shots last week, and I managed to get an RSV shot for my daughter at her 18 month wellness visit as well! Apparently they only give it out up to 19 months, and not normally for healthy babies/toddlers that age (high risk kids only). I argued that she should have it to protect her (soon to be) newborn brother and the ped agreed, so yay! I really wish my son (5) could get it too but there's no chance.

Now I just need to get the Covid shot and I'll be all set. I keep putting it off because that one always gives me horrible side effects. I don't have time to waste an afternoon and evening being useless with the chills and fever.

  • I've had my flu jab just over a week ago. I've got a covid vaccine booked for Saturday. I'm hoping I'm not ill with it, but I haven't had one for so long because they have only been for at risk groups here.
