When to share the news?

edited October 2024 in May 2025 Babies
Just found out we are pregnant with our first baby! 5w4d today. I had positive tests Thursday and shared with my husband, then Friday and Saturday took more tests and all confirming the great news! Had a wedding on Saturday and my 2 best friends I told because they would know since I wouldn’t be drinking. We have so many fall events coming up it’s going to be difficult keeping this secret!

We are excited to share the news with our families but know it could be risky telling people so early. Our first appointment is 10/15. When should we share the news or is it fine to share early to have support system?

Re: When to share the news?

  • The first time, I waited until after the first ultrasound to share news with immediate family and then shared publicly at 13 weeks.

This time I told my family immediately after I got the pregnancy results - I wanted their support and to share the good news (plus if anything happens I would want them to know anyway). I’m going to wait as long as possible to announce publicly.

I think it totally depends on your preferences and how close you are to family/ friends! But it’s nice to be able to talk to a few people as I wait for that first appointment ( also on the 14th!)

  • Totally depends on your preference! I’m very blessed and haven’t had issues with miscarriages so I told my whole family already. 9w2d today I told them at like 6w 😅
  • We told family yesterday at 5w5d after we had another ultrasound and saw baby & heartbeat. Will wait a little longer to tell others. I have historically told family early on in other pregnancies too just to be sure we had support if something were to happen.

  • Yeah I waited until I got an ultrasound that had a heartbeat to tell family and 12 weeks for everyone else.  I would “drink” a beer and my husband would take swigs every once in a while or get a tonic with lime slice while hiding it at parties and events! Congrats and good luck!

I think the big thing is making sure who you tell are also people you don’t mind having to tell in case the worst happens. Hopefully that won’t be the case!
