    Team blue/pink/green: Blue

Upcoming Appointments: This Friday for a limited anatomy scan.  Hopefully baby boy cooperates.

How are you feeling?: The heartburn/indigestion at night is getting worse.  I have been waking up multiple times a night.  It's not every night but it's getting closer and closer to being every night.  Also, I forgot who mentioned it but I have had some congestion for the past month and just a few days ago when I blow my nose in the morning there has been some blood.  Not full on nose bleeds but it has been a little bit every morning.  Hopefully your nose bleeds have gone away.

    Rants/Raves: NATM

Questions: If you are having a baby shower, when are you planning on having it.  We are just having a small one since this is our 2nd.  I'm thinking early in November.  I'm trying to avoid the holidays but last time we had it closer to the due date.

GTKY: What's something you've always wanted to learn how to do?  So many things lol.  Every time I see a new craft I want to learn how to do it.  Like last night I saw a video of a woman making these really cool giant acrylic paper clips and now I want to do that.  I enjoy being crafty but it's expensive and I just don't have the time right now.  Maybe one day...

    Upcoming Appointments: 10/21 OB checkin

How are you feeling?: Also feeling heartburn at night. I've found that propping up my pillows so I'm sleeping more in a sitting reclined position helps with this. Every time I lay more flat to sleep I end up waking up multiple times with heartburn/acid reflux which sucks.

Rants/Raves: Nothing really to report...I'm trying to balance feeling prepared/productive for FTM life while also knowing that for my anxiety prone mind there is definitely such a thing as too much research/information. Just something I'm trying to balance. The babies have names, registry is done, and shower invites are out, so those are some big things checked off the list.

    Questions: NATM

GTKY: What's something you've always wanted to learn how to do?
I've always wanted to be like really good at baking lol. I love cooking, but baking requires so much precision and small details that I've been pretty hit or miss. Would love to grow in that, primarily just to have as a fun hobby.

@kamays54 - Re: showers, we're having two showers (one for my side of the family, one for my husband's). One will be the last weekend in October, one will be the weekend before Thanksgiving. I totally get what you mean about planning around the holidays, that was a big obstacle for us in picking dates, and my parents are out of town for a couple weeks in November, so these dates just what we ended up with. As a FTM, I'm fine with the early showers, having baby stuff prepped early I think will make me feel somewhat more prepared, plus with having twins we could have the boys pretty early and I'm already huge, so I think later would just equal more discomfort.

Will give my full update later but for my fellow reflux sufferers:

Have you ever tried Gaviscon Advance? It is a pregnancy safe liquid made from sodium alginate to take before bed. Put simply, it creates a natural shield over your stomach to prevent the rising of acid when you lie down. It has helped me so much!  is only available online, as it’s not sold in the US for some weird reason (it has been recommended by both my GI and ENT docs) .

I’ve taken it nightly in pregnancy and had zero issues with night time reflux (historically was a major issue for me pre-pregnancy)

How are you feeling?: Starting to really feel big. Like, more obviously pregnant? Still dealing with carpel tunnel, especially at night, but I've started putting ace bandages on and it's helped.
I would agree with the heartburn! It always feels like it comes out of no where too, and suddenly I'm super constipated also. I got really sick last week with a stomach virus and ever since then it feels like my whole body is out of wack. Hopefully will regulate soon.

Questions: anyone else going for a VBAC? or anyone already had one successfully?

GTKY: What's something you've always wanted to learn how to do? probably a million things but I can't seem to think of any right now, haha

  • @kamays54 I had really bad acid reflex a couple of months ago and Pepcid helped immensely! I don’t know how often you can take it, but I would take it before bed and the effects seemed to help for a couple of days at a time. It was to the point where I couldn’t sleep due to coughing and propping myself up didn’t help. Highly recommend! Also, I may have been the person complaining about congestion 😅 it’s still an issue but I learned that reflux can contribute to it when the acid fumes get up and irritate your sinus passages. So hopefully addressing the reflux will help your nose!

How are you feeling?: a little fatigued and like others have said, the reflux has joined the party…Pepcid and Gaviscon Advance are keeping it pretty manageable.

Rants/Raves: I finished the core of our registry!! Feels so good. I also met a mom on a local Facebook group who is less than a mile away and giving a bunch of stuff away. We feel so blessed.

    Questions:  NATM

GTKY: What's something you've always wanted to learn how to do?
To play an instrument…well!! I love music and man that would be fun with baby. I do like to sing and while I’m no professional, I look forward to singing with baby girl ☺️
  • @kamays54, this is our first and we need basically everything so will have a shower. We’re doing it 11/16, and my sister is hosting but at our house. There will be a morning half for family and afternoon half for friends. Looking forward to it! I didn’t have a bridal shower so this is new for me.

Upcoming Appointments: October 9th i think

How are you feeling?: feeling pretty great. My belly is definitely starting to get in the way though. Like this morning i was frying eggs and looked down and my belly button was literally an inch from the skillet. Oops!😂

Rants/Raves: it was my toddlers birthday yesterday and it was so fun to see how excited she was about being 2 and being sang to. My oldest has so far not liked being sang to. I also had my midwife appt yesterday and baby is measuring big already (fundal height). My midwife laughed and said “im not worried though. You have big babies i guess”. My first was 8.12 and my second 10.3 so definitely no tiny babies from me. I was a little bit hoping for a tiny 7lb-er this time but unless he’s born early i doubt that will be the case😂

    Questions: nqtm

GTKY: What's something you've always wanted to learn how to do?
ooo this is a good question! Pretty much anything ive tried i can do good enough but some of the things i want to learn to be better. Like knitting, sewing, cooking, etc. I do a good enough job for home use but id love to learn more and not just wing it half the time😅
  • @kendyb77 those are some great things to have checked off!  How exciting to have the names picked out.  We have names picked out but my husband is going to have final say (one option is his father's name who passed) so for now he's just baby boy.  We didn't decide on my daughter's name up until the end so she was nugget for most of the time lol.

@fk18 & @strongishmom I'll have to try those.  My doctor gave me a list of all the approved over the counter medications I can take while pregnant and Gaviscon and Pepcid are on there.  It has been so inconsistent that I was just trying to treat it as it came but since it's happening more and more I think  I'm going to have to try something more preventative.  @kendyb77 sometimes sitting up helps and I actually sit up in bed for about half an hour before laying down every night to see if easing into laying down helps.

@kmtz89 So far my doctor hasn't mentioned anything about having a c-section this time around so I may possibly have a VBAC.  But...I have a feeling that it will be another c-section.  My daughter was small (6lbs 3oz) and born a week early and at the anatomy scan baby boy was already measuring a week ahead.  Also, I still have the same high risk factors I had with my daughter.  I really don't have a preference, although I sort of know what to expect with a c-section so I'm a little more comfortable with that I guess.
  • @kamays54, forgot to mention that I think I was the one who mentioned nosebleeds! They’ve decreased considerably, now maybe every 2 weeks and very mild ones. I put aquafor in my left nostril to keep it moist which might help lol it’s only on the left side, but I also have a mildly deviated septum on that side

How are you feeling?: decent! I feel like that’s my weekly answer lately. Sometimes it’s hard to get comfortable going to sleep because my lungs feel squished, but it’s manageable.

Rants/Raves: baby is moving around more every week and I love it!

Questions: I have big questions about how to raise a boy to be a good human and handle whatever pressures and expectations come around masculinity etc. I know what it’s like growing up female/feminine in the US, and it’s somewhat of a relief to not have to face that with a girl, but I don’t have a similarly deep understanding of what society says to boys. This is sort of rhetorical but if anyone knows of some good resources around this, I’m all ears.

GTKY: What's something you've always wanted to learn how to do? Dance! I’ve taken a bunch of types of dance classes over the years but nothing I’ve stuck with. I just love the idea of being a really excellent dancer.

Upcoming Appointments: TBD, having issues with insurance during the move from Hawaii to D.C. I saw a nurse-midwife the first full day after landing, but looking to switch to my preferred OB group so I can deliver at my preferred hospital. Looking to set my next MFM scan (28 weeks) and testing for gestational diabetes’s (between now and 28 weeks) + my October routine check in.

How are you feeling?: have a ton of energy. Walking 5-10 miles a day, but may be due to the move and my motivation to get settled as soon as possible in order to be ready for baby.

Rants/Raves: both rant and rave - having to do an unexpected overseas move, buying a home in a new location, having to furnish up, all while in 2nd tri of a pregnancy has been an adventure! We moved into a new house early in my pregnancy in Hawai’i, then a month later we find out we have to move to D.C. We are lucky we are moving close to family and close friends (albeit few states over but still closer than HI), but I feel like all I’ve been doing since the start of this pregnancy is a lot of movement and no stability. Including a few 10+ hour flights and have lived in 6 different places 😅 looking forward to getting into our new house, getting our new and current furniture in, and setting everything up for baby, which likely won’t happen until right before the earliest the baby can get delivered (36 weeks), and we still likely won’t be fully set up. The “nesting” feeling of moms expecting - I’m not even close to be able to nest! Letting things flow and letting go of things I can’t control!

Questions: I love the previous question re: raising a boy in this world. I feel like this deserves a separate thread to discuss!

GTKY: What's something you've always wanted to learn how to do? so much! Abstract painting (lol)

How are you feeling?: really good recently ☺️ we are on our baby moon right now and I was afraid I would be asleep by 8 every night, but luckily my energy seems to be coming back finally

Rants/Raves: being able to feel baby move all the time now is the greatest reassurance, I'm so grateful to be at this stage. Only hearing a heartbeat every 4 weeks was really difficult for me mentally... now that I feel him tossing and turning all the time I'm just much more at ease. BUT I'm starting to really stress about the nursery.... we have done VERY little so far, so it's starting to feel a bit overwhelming

Questions: this is a personal question so I'm not expecting responses necessarily, but I'm wondering if you guys have decided to try breastfeeding? Especially for the stm/ttm+... if you breastfed before did you supplement with formula, and what were the biggest positives and negatives to breastfeeding in your experience?

GTKY: What's something you've always wanted to learn how to do? Play an instrument for sure! I always wished I had tried the piano or drums. Also.. play chess. It's a game I think I would love, very interested in learning some day
  • @jaclyn-ak
re: breastfeeding. My first started out strong and breast feeding was going great and I was really pleased as that had been my plan. But around 4 months of minimal weight gain we discovered she had a congenital heart defect and the effort it took her to feed was actually canceling out the calories she could get. I was so discouraged by this and had to switch her to fortified formula and didn't get to breast feed anymore. It was really hard for me to come to terms with that, because I felt like my body was doing all the right things and I really enjoyed it but had to stop for her growth. Eventually I came to terms with it but I am really looking forward to trying again with this baby. My breasts have been super tender this whole pregnancy and feel like they're "getting ready" if that makes sense.

As far as positives, I really loved that I could feed her anywhere at anytime with no prep! Carrying around formula and bottles and everything was quite a transition, though not a "hard" one per say, just took some getting use to. Or waking in the middle of the night to make a bottle rather than just being able to pull out a boob.

  • @jaclyn-ak I breastfed and then pumped and breastfed when I went back to work.  We always talked about supplementing with formula if needed but we didn't need to.

Biggest positive for me was just being able and fortunate enough to do it.  I know that not everyone can do it, so I'm just glad I was able to.  I set a goal of doing it for a year and then I would transition.  I enjoyed the bonding experience and as @kmtz89 mentioned it was nice to be able to do it when ever/where ever without needing a ton of stuff.  Even with all the negatives you will read below, I had a hard time coming to terms with it ending because of the bonding time.

Now for the negatives...It can be stressful.  You can't really measure how much they are getting and for me it was hard to tell when she was actually nursing versus comfort nursing.  So when I was at home, I would just let her nurse for a long time (sometimes 45mins - 1 hour).  There were times I would stop her but if I wasn't really doing anything I would just let her nurse.  I also had to go back to work after 2 months so I was breastfeeding and pumping.  That started to take a toll.  It's one thing to breastfeed but to be stuck to a machine while you're at work is not fun or ideal in some cases.  Pumping also comes with the stress of "am I producing enough?" because now you are measuring.  We would try to keep a stash in the freezer but then that becomes stressful when you have to use it and you aren't sure if you can replenish it.  I had to use it when I had a blocked duct, which is another negative.  That hurt so much.  Luckily it didn't turn into mastitis because I heard that hurts even more.  I also had to use some when I missed a pumping session which then dropped my production.

Despite the negatives, I still want to do it again with this one and I hope I can make it the full year again.  It can be hard and I'm a little worried about getting through the entire year but I want to try my best to have the same experience with him.
  • @jaclyn-ak im planning to breastfeed again. With my first, i started supplementing with formula around 4 months. She went through a growth spurt and as hard as i tried to increase my supply, it didnt happen. Having formula was such a huge relief. My baby was hungry and cranky and i felt so helpless that she wasnt getting enough from me. She always nursed good in the mornings and during the day but by evening i was pretty empty so id nurse her and then tank her up with a bottle before bed. With my second i had so much milk and had no issues nursing. If anything having too much was the problem and she spit up a TON! Full on fire hose down her throat😂 It was recommended i only nurse her for 3 mins at a time and stop her to get her to burp before continuing. That helped somewhat🤪 she was always a fast nurser though, 5mins tops and she was nice and chunky, gaining weight good and filling diapers, so i didn't have to worry about how much she was getting. Just nursed on demand. Breastfeeding is such a personal choice and every baby can bring a different experience. I know of many who for a time have had to cut out dairy and/or soy because their baby had a negative reaction. The trial and error of that can be mentally exhausting but if there is an intolerance buying special formula is $$$. I will do my hardest to breastfeed my baby while also knowing that if it’s effecting my mental health negatively, my baby is better off with a healthy mom+formula. This is also a place where I’ve given my husband permission to tell me what to do and i just have to do what he says. He’s not as emotionally invested but him and our children bare the brunt of my mental health if it does start to decline.
  • @kmtz89 @kamays54 @babywiik thank you all so much for sharing! I’m planning on trying to breastfeed but I know so many women who weren’t able to or had to stop early for whatever reason, so I’m absolutely ok with switching to formula if I have to. But it seems like there are stressors either way. @babywiik I particularly appreciate the idea of asking my husband to tell me if it seems like it’s affecting everyone negatively. I think it will help to have that outside perspective.
  • Thank you all for sharing!! Most of my friends and family with kids exclusively fed with formula so it was really nice reading about some different experiences here. Im hoping to breast feed at least in the beginning but trying not to stress over it too much yet
