Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Baby on a nap strike

My baby started refusing naps right around 3 months. He is now 15 weeks. He will sleep in my arms or only sleep for 30 minutes in his crib. He is great at sleeping through the night - I’m talking 630pm to 630am. I hear him wake up through sleep cycles and put himself back to sleep so I know he’s capable of that. But during the day if I can get him down in the crib he wakes up screaming exactly 30 minutes later and can’t get himself back to sleep. I’ve tried different wake times - 1 hour, 1.5 hours even 2 hours - so I know it’s not overtired or under tired. Is this just a phase I need to work through with him? Has anybody else experienced this? Any tips?

Re: Baby on a nap strike

  • My baby is 5.5 months (24 wk) old now and we have also dealt with poor napping (30 minutes exactly) ever since he was 2 months old and began showing potential to roll causing us to have to stop swaddling him. He would and will sleep for 1-3 hours if swaddled or restricted (car seat) but if laying down unwrapped, he stirs and wakes up during the first cycle every time. Not sure what started it for you, could just be baby developmental changes, but count your blessings that your baby sleeps so well at night. I fell into cosleeping when he wouldn’t sleep unswaddled at 2 months old and now he still wakes frequently at night (usually every 2 hours) to feed. Definitely going to have to sleep train to break that habit and it’s going to be a rough adjustment! Every baby is different, know you aren’t alone in your struggles! I know a mom who said one of her babies just stopped napping all together after a few months! Whatever you can make work for you and baby is best is my take. If this isn’t working for you, try sleep training for naps.

  • Im in the same boat as you’re. Grateful that the baby sleeps at night but naps have been a struggle. I end up just holding her for a longer nap or the other option is once she begins stirring trying to shush, pat or simply hold her so she can go into the next sleep cycle. They say that naps and bedtime sleep are controlled by different parts of the brain and that’s why it is not consistent. Also, I’ve learnt that naps tend to get longer around 6 months as a part of the continuing development.

How many naps is your baby taking? At 15 weeks 4 naps is pretty typical, naps usually lasting between 45min-1hr. Have you tried a schedule where wake windows are progressively longer as the day goes on? For example: 1hr/1.25/1.25/1.5/1.5 (/=nap). It usually takes babies a few days to adjust to a schedule so any change you make I’d recommend keeping for 3-4 days at least to see if it’s working.

Another thought- what is baby’s room like during naps? A blacked out room with white noise can help a ton!

    I hope this helps!
  • I’m dealing with the same thing right now but how did you get him to sleep through the night. We have a great night  sleeper but he’s getting up at 4:30am to feed every night
