running while pregnant with third

I'm 5 weeks pregnant with #3, and I started running after #2. I run 5-10k 3-4 times a week. Can anyone tell me what it'll be like while pregnant? Will I feel like baby will fall out while I'm running?

Re: running while pregnant with third

  • Seems to me you'll probably feel pretty good, considering you run so often now. The last time I ran was at 7.5 months (a month ago) and besides being considerably slower and feeling some pressure on my bladder, it wasn't bad. Didn't feel tugging or pulling! I stopped because I'm experiencing back pain too often now. Can't wait to get back out there!

  • It's going to depend on you personally.

The first time I ran all through the pregnancy and it didn't feel any different than before.  Just slower.  It was also the only time my guy would be still!  Like the running rocked him to sleep.

This time I'm only 11 weeks and I'm already having a lot of difficulty with breathing.  It feels like I'm running through sand because it's much more difficult and I'm much slower.

  • I ran two half marathons already, one at eleven weeks and the second at twenty two weeks. Was training before I was even pregnant so doc gave me the blessing. Just slow your pace and stay hydrated. Gabrialla belt is amazing.
  • Depends....

I ran almost to the end with #1 and #2.  However, I stopped running at 20 weeks with #3.  I did feel a lot of pressure and discomfort with her.  Towards the very end, I even had trouble functioning at work (I have somewhat of a physical job).  I will say however, I had #3 one week ago and already feel soooo much better.

  • My first pregnancy, running felt very uncomfortable. I had bad heartburn and anything with a kind of "jostling" motion really exacerbated it. So I switched to walking and pool workouts.

This time around, I ran all through my first trimester, including a half-marathon. Took a couple of weeks off due to a bad cold over the holidays, and since then have been having bladder issues (pain/urgency) when I run. I've found that if I do a run/walk and keep my distance on the short side, it's OK for now. I would love to be one of those women who can run up to my due date, but I don't know that it's in the cards for me.

  • Any recommendations on where to find supportive running shorts? Seems like they don't make many exercise clothes for preggo ladies

I ran until the day I was induced. I was very slow towards the end (16 min miles), but I felt great! I never felt like my baby was moving around too muchx or was going to fall out. I did stop for 8 weeks in the beginning because of morning sickness, but other than that I would run 5 times a week 3.5-4 miles. If you feel good while you are doing it, then there is no issue!
  • I haven't found good running shorts ( I wanted something like nike/UA shorts with a band)...So I settled with capris (I like the Ingrid and Isabel workout capris from Target) and I bought some dry-fit workout t-shirts in a larger size (XL) from the sale rack from Nike, Adidas, and UA.  I got 4 workout shirts from the sale rack,  2 old Navy maternity workout shirts with sports bras in them, 1 pair of old navy maternity capris, and 3 pairs of Ingrid and Isabel Target workout capris. Plus 3 nice moving comfort bras. These lasted me for 9 months working out 5 days a week. I've tapered off my workouts this month. This was cost effective and so much nicer than some of the maternity workout stuff I found.

Runningskirts.com actually makes a maternity running skirt with a large panel that can cover belly or be folded down (Sizing is different so check the size chart unless you know the product well!)

I ran with both my pregnancies. You can keep running until you feel uncomfortable, then clearly your body is telling you it needs to slow down or stop. I knew to stop because I felt a dullish sharpish pain, and then I started using the elliptical machine.
  • I'm 26 weeks now. I ran a 1/2 marathon at 20 weeks, and a ten mile race at 21 weeks. I trained really well (4 long runs of at least 9.5 miles), but for both of those runs, I got bad stomach cramps after mile 8 or so. It basically felt like menstrual cramps. It's also hard on the bladder. I empty my bladder right before I leave the house, but as soon as I switch to my running gait, I immediately feel the urge to go. I even wet my shorts once! Now I have an issue that post-run I have a shooting pain near my vagina. It's super painful to stand up and walk. I don't know if I can keep going, but I'm going to try the belt someone recommended and hope that that does the trick. Good luck!!
  • I'm at 5w 2d. I still feel great and exercise everyday. Still running three days a week too. I lessened my miles and eased up my pace. I hope to keep running as long as it feels good to me. The doctor gave me the green light. I still see so much conflicting information online. My first appointment is sept 21. I will be almost 11 weeks and btw first baby. Will be 38 at time of delivery. What do you gals think about running?????
  • You'll likely notice that as your bump grows throughout the third trimester, your pace naturally slows down. If you feel tired, pay attention to your body and take it easy. If you have any unusual pains  While running  IN pregnant, stop immediately and call your doctor or midwife .
  • Congratulations on your pregnancy! It's great to hear that you have maintained an active lifestyle. Many women continue to run during their pregnancies, and while every experience is unique, it's common to have some concerns. Generally, as long as you listen to your body and consult with your healthcare provider, running can be safe throughout most of your pregnancy.

You might notice some changes in how you feel while running - some women experience a bit of pressure or discomfort but not typically the sensation that the baby will "fall out." It cab help to wear a supportive maternity sports bra and consider adjusting your pace or distance as you progress through each trimester.

Always prioritize hydration and rest when needed, and don't hesitate to seek advice from other experienced runners or professionals in prenatal fitness. Your health and comfort should always come first! If you're unsure about anything specific, reaching out to your healthcare provider for personalized guidance can provide peace of mind. You've got this!
