Salt for a baby???

Okay so I'm 17, and when I work and go to school my mom watches my 6 month old daughter. I just read a thing about how too much salt is bad for a baby. When I was at work today my mom texted me saying she gave my daughter goolash (you know tomatoe soup with noodles) and I asked her if it was too salty. And she got really pissed at me and we got in a big fight. She says she knows what she's doing and that I don't know shit. (Sorry for the language) but I checked the soup can and it says 480 mgs. My mom said my daughter ate a lot of it. Am I over reacting?

Re: Salt for a baby???

  • Anything canned like that does have a lot of sodium. A lot of salt is bad for anyone. With that said, when we started solids with my daughter, she ate whatever I cooked spices and all. I did minimize the salt I used. I preferred to use Mrs. Dash seasonings as it's salt free. I like to cook and preferred to cook meals like that, because you able to control the salt intake better.
Essentially your daughter is okay, but I wouldn't feed her can/boxed foods like that often. It's a lot easier to make them yourself.

  • Salt can indeed be harmful to babies, and it's great that you're looking out for her well-being. While your mom may have experience, it's important to remember that nutrition guidelines for infants are designed to protect their developing bodies.

You're not overreacting; it's natural to want the best for your child. It might be helpful to have a calm discussion with your mom about why you're worried and share what you found regarding salt intake for babies. Try framing it as a collaborative effort in caring for your daughter rather than a confrontation. This could help ease any tension and open up a productive conversation about her diet and nutrition moving forward. Ultimately, both of you have the same goal: ensuring the health and happiness of your little one!
