Fish + methylmercury

My soon to be 2 year old ate a year ago a small portion of fish (finnish freshwater perch). Now I'm worried that there was too much methylmercury and that I poisoned her accidentally. The fish she ate didn't have super high content of mercury (about 0.20mg/kg) and was a small fish, not the big ones that can accumulate lots of toxins. And she didn't eat the whole fish, max. 40 g. Please tell me there's no reason to worry and I'm just being silly. The kid is fine, talking 4-word-sentencies already and seems to learn things quickly.
(I have OCD and trouble to differentiate what are normal parenting related worries and what is OCD-sh1t.)

Re: Fish + methylmercury

  • I understand your concern, but based on the information provided, there is likely no reason to worry about methylmercury poisoning. A small portion of freshwater perch, which has a relatively low mercury content, would not be expected to cause any issues, especially for a toddler who seems to be developing normally. The amount consumed was quite small, and young childern are generally quite resilient. Your daughter's current health and development are positive sings that she was not harmed. While it's understandable to have worries as a parent, in this case your concerns about mercury poisoning appear to be unfounded. Your child's wellbeing suggests you did not accidentally poison her. Try not to overthink this - focus on the fact that she is thriving, which is the best indicator that she is healthy and unharmed.
