Baby's losing weight

I have an 8 month old baby boy. About a week ago, he started getting really fussy, with a runny nose, congestion, and lots of drooling.  He wouldn't sleep for several days, waking every 30-60 minutes, and his appetite was decreased.  I thought maybe he was teething, but haven't seen any emerge yet, so I'm guessing it's just a cold.  His sleep is better and he's much happier, but his appetite is still decreased.  Now he will usually eat 4-6 ounces of pumped breast milk or formula about 6x per day, and a few tablespoons of soft table food (banana, mashed steamed carrots, rice, fish, etc) 2x per day.  He felt a little thinner to me this morning, so I weighed him and found that he has lost weight since our last pedi visit -- he was 19 pounds about a month ago, and today weighed 18.5 pounds at home.  What can I do to get him to eat more and put that weight back on?  I read on the Pediasure website that it's not recommended for babies under a year, so is there any other option?  He also has a diary sensitivity (causes gas and spit up), so milk, cheese, yogurt, etc are out for the time being.  Any suggestions you have would be most welcome.  Thanks!!

Try to use asafoetida or cinnamon powder. Add a pinch to your baby's food. It will help to improve your baby's appetite. You may try any food that contains zinc as well.

  • It's essential to monitor your baby's weight loss closely. Focus on offering nutritious, calorie-dense foods like avocados, nut butter, and fortified cereals. Consider discussing your concerns with a pediatrician to rule out underlying issues and explore alternative options like hypoallergenic formula or dietary modifications for his dairy sensitivity.
  • Here are some suggestions that may help get him back on track:

    - Offer smaller, more frequent feedings of breast milk or formula. Try to get him to take 6-8 ounces per feeding, even if it means feeling him more times per day.

    - Incorporate high-calorie, nutrient-dense foods like avocado, nut butters, full-fat yogurt (if tolerated), and pureed meats. These can be mixed into his other foods to boost calories.

    - Stay hydrated by offering breast milk, formula, or water between feedings. Dehydration can further suppress appetite.

    - Try different textures and flavors to stimulate his interest in eating. Offer a variety of soft, mashed, or finely chopped table foods.

    - Consider speaking to your pediatrician about a high-calorie, non-diary nutritional supplement like Elecare or Neocate if his weight loss continues. These are designed for infants with food sensitives.

The most important thing is to keep offering nutritional frequently and patiently. I'm confident that with your attentive care, your baby will regain his appetite and weight in no time. Let me know if you have any other questions!
