Pregnant after 35

Hypothyroidism during Pregnancy

Hoping to get some additional insight! I am just over 6 weeks pregnant and had an ultrasound already due to having a previous miscarriage. Fortunately, they were able to see my baby and detect a healthy heartbeat during the ultrasound! However, it was also determined that I have hypothyroidism during this appointment and would need to see a specialist to manage my thyroid. They also put me on 50mg of Levothyroxine. My TSH levels were at 4.88 which just crosses into the range for hypothyroidism but is higher than the 2.5 max TSH levels considered safe for pregnancy. Has anyone had an experience like this? Just looking for some insights and to better understand what the concerns are for my pregnancy and baby. Thank you!

Re: Hypothyroidism during Pregnancy

  • Hey, just seeing this. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism due to Hashimoto’s disease (an autoimmune disorder) in early 2023. Like you, my TSH was in the 4s. Soon after that I had a miscarriage, and my endocrinologist was convinced that it was because I hadn’t gotten my TSH under control yet. That’s the most important thing for pregnancy, to my understanding - that your TSH is within healthy range (my endo is aiming for 2 or lower). If you have been working with a specialist and they’ve been checking your levels regularly - and adjusting accordingly - then that’s good! The only other thing I would toss out there for consideration is to see if your doc will test you for antibodies. If your hypothyroidism is due to an autoimmune disorder, then there are other things you can do to try to manage it.

    Hope that helps!
