Big baby or early delivery?

Hi! I’m new to this forum 😊 I’m 28w1d with my 2nd son, and I had my 28 week appointment today. I was told I have gained 43 pounds, and I’m measuring about 3 weeks ahead. I was never told anything like this with my oldest son, so I’m wondering if I may end up delivering early? My oldest son was almost 10 pounds, so I’m thinking I may just be having another big baby. Anyone else experiencing anything similar?

Re: Big baby or early delivery?

  • I am measuring 1 week ahead and every ultrasound there have been comments on how long his arms and legs are and how big his feet are for his age. If he doesn’t arrive early, I’m thinking mine will be a big baby too.

  • It's very hard to tell. In my last pregnancy I was told a lot that I was going to have a big baby after my first son was 9lb2. He's very tall like his dad. My second son ended up being over a lb smaller. 🤷‍♀️
  • Hey OP! Any chance you have gestational diabetes? That’ll definitely have you birthing big babies but they usually induce or do planned C-sections between 37-39 weeks if that’s the case. Like @cornichonmam wrote, they can guess how big your baby is all they want but there’s no guarantee. But, if I were you and had any worries about baby being big, I’d ask all the questions about how concerned your provider is for shoulder distocia because that ish is scary and should be avoided at all costs by inducing/sectioning as soon as you reach full term! That situation has a lot to do not just with baby’s size but the size and shape of your pelvis so there’s no “one size fits all” so to speak.
