1st Trimester

Strength training during first trimester

I’ve been lifting heavy weights since 2021. I love it and I’ve been very consistent since then. I’ve seen a lot of women continue with their strength training during pregnancy but I don’t hear a lot from the first trimester. Does anyone know anything about it?

Re: Strength training during first trimester

  • I follow online strength classes and some of the women are pregnant in them so I’ve sort of gone off that.

  • If it is something you have consistently done and you just found out you are pregnant you can continue your routine. However, depending on your health history your doctor may recommend lighter weight or other changes to suit your individual needs. I run, it's safe to continue running so long as the baby or I do not become distressed by the activity.
  • Usually it's recommended not to start NEW exercise while PG.  However, continuing what you have been doing is acceptable, within the confines of your specific medical conditions.  If you are concerned about your specific situation, please call and discuss with your doctor.

  • My doctor told me I could continue my strength training and that I wouldn't miscarry from lifting weights. What she expressed the most concern about was that apparently your ligaments get all "loosey goosey" during pregnancy so you may be more prone to injury. She cautioned me against heavy lifts over head just for fear of dropping something in case my ligaments go haywire. Her concerns were centered around potential injury but she encouraged me to continue my weight training. I've cut back on my heavy deadlifting mainly because I'm already so tired and don't want to over exhaust myself further.
