Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Swimming Lessons

Hi everyone!

I’ve been thinking a lot about infant swimming lessons and wanted to hear about your experiences or thoughts on the topic. My little one is nearing 6 months old, and I’ve been toying with the idea of starting swim classes. I’ve heard so many mixed opinions about it, and I'm curious what others think.

On one hand, I love the idea of introducing my baby to the water early. It seems like a great way to bond and potentially get him comfortable with swimming from a young age. Plus, I’ve read that it can be beneficial for motor skills and building confidence. I’m also looking forward to seeing him splash around and enjoy the water!

On the other hand, I’m a bit nervous about how he’ll handle it. He’s a bit of a cautious baby, and I’m not sure how he’ll react to the water. I’m also wondering if he’s too young to get much out of it or if it’s just a fun activity for us to enjoy together.

Have any of you tried infant swimming lessons? How did your baby respond? Did you notice any benefits or challenges? I’d love to hear your stories or any advice you might have.

Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences!

Re: Swimming Lessons

  • We started our baby in swim class at 7 months. She loves it! It's a half an hour class which is plenty long. She splashes and plays in the water. She is now 8 months and we have had 5 classes. She is already way more comfortable putting her face in the water and actually closing her mouth lol. She will float on her back practically unassisted, we are still close with a hand on her at all times. My husband does the classes with her because he works all week, so it's great bonding time for them. There is another baby in the class who is two weeks older who really does not like the class. He spends most of the time clinging to his dad and fussing. So I guess it really does depend on the baby! We are quite happy and have already signed up for the fall classes.
