Many complications - SCH, positive NIPT for T21, and a CVS. HELP!

I’m currently 13 weeks exactly with di/di twins. I found out at my 8 week appointment to just verify that I was pregnant. About 2.5 weeks later I passed a large clot and started bleeding. I found out I have a subchorionic hematoma and was put on pelvic rest.

The next week I got my NIPT result (I was about 10 weeks, maybe 4-5 days?), and it said I was at high risk for T21, Down’s syndrome. My fetal fraction was low at 5.9% and 5.7%. But it said I had an 88% chance that at least one of the babies has Down’s syndrome.

I then went on to have 2 separate NT scans (one with my regular doctor and one with a high risk doctor). Regular doctor said the NT readings were both low (2mm and 1.2mm), and everything looked good with their hearts/heart rates. High risk doctor said he got readings of 2.7mm and 1.5mm, both of which are within normal range, but said the twin with the larger reading is most likely the affected twin. He also said he saw some concerns in both of their hearts with the blood flow. But he wasn’t sure what that meant, and couldn’t give me a good answer as to how to feel about it.

High risk doctor performed a CVS yesterday for a diagnosis one way or the other on both twins. Of course, one twin’s placenta is anterior and the other is posterior. So they had to go in both abdominally and cervically, and then went in twice to make sure they could get a good sample (so that’s 4 separate needles). It was traumatizing to say the least.

I’m scared as hell and don’t know how much more bad news I can handle. I’ve only know that I’m having twins for a month, and it’s just been one thing after the next. I already suffer from severe anxiety and depression, and typically exercise to take the edge off (in addition to my medication). I’m taking my meds, but am not allowed to do any of the other things I enjoy to take my mind off of things. I’m waiting on CVS results but need some help in the mean time. Any reassurance would be appreciated! Thanks!

  • I am really sorry that you didn't get better news and that you had to go through all of that. There is still a chance that both babies are fine. My parents were told that my brother had Down's Sydrome- showed very high risk. The amnio showed he didn't and was perfectly healthy. I'm not sure if you are a woman of faith, but I am, and I'll say a prayer for your babies and also for your peace of mind.

  • So sorry you're going through all this. It is so much! I don't really have any words of advice, just sending you Internet hugs. When will you get CVS results?
