Glucose test

Hey ladies, I just got results I was “ borderline” with first glucose test at 130.  So I have to do long version.  The short 2 hour fasting and then hour at the waiting room post drink till blood test was insanely hard.  I got twins in belly and trying really hard to get them to 5lbs that I eat something almost every hour.  The first test my tummy was growling so loudly in waiting room and now have 8 hour fast and then 3 hours test.  I am not worried I have it, more anxious about not eating for that long without passing out.

Re: Glucose test

  • Ugh I’m so sorry! I got borderline last time and had to do the long test too, I was so hungry and I wasn’t carrying twins. It’s hard. Can you message your OB about your worries? It might be a good idea to find a comfy couch in a waiting area and just hang out doing nothing so you don’t use any energy while waiting for the blood draw.

  • This test is the worst! There has to be a better way. I highly doubt I have it, but did the screening yesterday. Already not feeling great, and then having to go through that nastiness.... I was at my public health appointment two hours later, thought I was going to pass out and ended up filling the nurse's garbage can with watery puke. I'm still having a hard time eating and with the growth spurt I'm already ravenous all the time.

Good luck with your second draw ❤️

  • I'm sorry to dive in, I'm from the Dec 2024 group.

Usually they plan the start of the long test early in the morning, since you have to be fasting for at least 8h. So that should help a little since most of the fasting will have been done while asleep. It's definitely not a fun screening.

Have you asked your provider for an alternative to this screening? I don't know if it is something that can replace the long test, but I know some providers accepts that you take your glucose 5-6x/day for about two weeks instead of the short screening if someone has a hard time doing the test (vomiting during the wait period for example).

    Best wishes to you!
  • I talked to dr about my worries and she was like well you will be hungry but this is easiest way to make sure you plus are all okay.  I am 36 y.o and all my friends that have gotten pregnant within last year had to do long versions (and 1 mama is a dietitian) so I think just age.  I am on the 2x month appt already and was asked to get done before next week’s appt.  Booked earliest slot available at 645 at the testing center.  I hope nobody else has to do this long test!

  • I just had my short screening yesterday and came back high (166). I will do my 3 hr test next week and am also not looking forward to it as I have a history of fainting especially when combining fasting and blood draws. Best of luck to everyone on these tests.
  • @midwestkab I personally agree with your doctor that's it's the quickest/easiest way. I personally hated to take my glucose at home last pregnancy (I had gestational diabetes).

Thanks for your kind wishes, but I will accompany you in doing the long test, and for a second time at that, this pregnancy. I did an early test at 16 weeks with not so good results, so I did the long test then too. I have to go through it in a few weeks also.

I hope it goes well for you and that you feel okay during the long wait.
  • @mamahen521 I used to pass out all the time (low bp) so you just know the feeling and then gets in your head even worse. Good luck next week with your test.

The DH asked this morning if I skipped all my headful of nuts every hour because I seemed extra quiet… hahaha yes and i felt so hungry I had a pre breakfast banana before I could make my egg… so hungry
  • Best of luck to those of you doing the long test!

I have my first test tomorrow and I'm dreading it. I've still been throwing up regularly in the mornings and bed time so I'm really hoping I can keep this drink down and complete the test.
  • Good luck @mitchip!

I don't think you have to fast (if it's the screening), so maybe get some crackers or toast down before the test to cushion your stomach, and they may give you some Gravol or something if you let them know you're nauseous already...

I was able to keep that nasty drink down for the test itself, but three hours later spewed it all out.
  • I officially have gestational diabetes. Anyone have it in a previous pregnancy and have any tips for diet and management? I go to an educational class next Wednesday to learn about managing my sugar levels for the next few months until baby comes.
  • Lily Nichols - Real Food for Gestational Diabetes is a great book, also follow the Glucose Goddess on Instagram. I had GD with my first two pregnancies and these were both amazing resources for diet controlled GD.
  • @mamahen521 In my case, my doctor suggested an appointment with a nutritionist and she helped making slight changed to my diet but since it most of my diet was already GD friendly, we didn't change much.

The only value that was problematic was my fasting glucose which is a bit harder to control than after meal glucose levels. We were able to get it down a bit with a sweet snack just before bed (usually a warm milk with a spoon of chocolate powder, or yogurt with fresh fruits), but it was still on the line. In the end, I still had to take slow-acting insulin at night to help control my fasting glucose.

I hope you get it under control with a diet! Best of luck!!
  • Thank you both! I am learning so much already about GD and am working on some new meal plans for the rest of the pregnancy. We will see what the class and my doctor say next week.
  • Black and blue on both arms and welts from multiple pokes, oh you are very dehydrated. You guys said no food or liquid pre test and during the test… I was so thirsty… results back and I’m fine :)
  • GDM is the worst! I basically can’t eat any grains. Also lots of fruits spike my blood sugar. Experimenting with portions and food combining but it just sucks because I want to eat all the watermelon :( 14 more weeks!
  • @jessicaupstateny That sounds hard. Have you tried buckwheat? It's pretty low GI for a grain because it's hight fiber, you can also get buckwheat flour to make pancakes. It might be worth a try. If you know anywhere that sells Eastern European foods they'll have it there.
