Warning about iron in prenatals

This may not be true for everyone but wanted to raise awareness incase it helps anyone.

My labs kept showing elevated liver enzymes so I had a natural doc I’ve worked with in the past check my iron levels because in the past it’s correlated (OB didn’t think necessary). Anyway, my iron levels were extremely high and I learned that excess iron can be just as harmful for baby. So I shared the results with my OB, and he agreed I should find a prenatal without iron.

Not all pregnant women need extra iron from prenatal if you’re eating a balanced diet. And some folks like me hold on to the excess… it was making me very sick. Luckily I figured it out before it caused any harm to baby. I feel so much better and labs have normalized.
I was taking Parelel 1st trimester packs, switched to Needed.

  • This is good to know. I avoided a prenatal with iron because that has also shown to add to 1st trimester nausea and that's already something I struggle with.

  • Something I was told by my doctor is that iron can also increase nausea. I had no clue this was the case and have been supplementing iron because my prenatal gummy had none. Little did I know the iron was working against me. My doctor recommended to pause the iron until I’m through my first tri and nausea has subsided.
