Blood pressure and pregnant

I have been taking amlodipine and lisinopril before I found out I was pregnant. The pharmacy told me to stop taking lisinopril now that I am pregnant. I had an appointment with my PCP who switched me off amlodipine to nifedepine which is safer while pregnant. I had my first ob appointment yesterday to confirm pregnancy. I am 8 weeks. She told me if my blood pressure is 90/60 to stop taking bp medication for now. When I left I saw on mychart I had a referral to Maternal fetal medicine for my anatomy scan at 18-20 weeks due to the exposure of lisinopril before finding out I was pregnant. Obviously I'm going to be asking if I should be worried at my next appointment, but until then my mind is full of thoughts. Anyone else have a similar experience? Is this just extra precaution to make sure baby is okay?

Re: Blood pressure and pregnant

  • I found out I had high blood pressure when my husband and I started trying for our first.  I was put on medication that is considered safe during pregnancy.  The first one did not work well for me so I was switched to another.  It worked better but I was still having side effects. When I spoke with the doctor, they said I am very limited on what I can take but if the side effects are that bad then we would have to switch and weigh the risks to the baby.  I believe (I'm not in the medical field so take this with a grain of salt) that most don't start to affect the baby until the 2nd or 3rd trimester.  If your doctor didn't seem worried, I wouldn't worry too much.  If you are high risk (i.e. high blood pressure, advanced maternal age, etc.) you get monitored a lot closer.  Which in my case was nice because I got extra ultrasounds so I got to see the baby more often.  Same with this one.  Also, with my first, I was on 2 medications (one was a diuretic) and part way through they told me to stop taking the diuretic because it could cause complications and my blood pressure at the time was doing really good.  Hope this helps!  When is your next appointment?

I found out I had high blood pressure when I went for my first appt. So at first they wanted to monitor it and now as of the last three weeks I'm on medication, though I cant remember what it is called right now... but I am also being closely monitored, have another(my third) apt tomorrow (12 weeks)

  • My next appointment is in a few weeks. I did have the nurse call me back to reassure me that everything is okay. I couldnt wait until my appointment, lol. They just want to "cross their T's and dot their I's" to make sure everything is okay. So far baby looks like it should and has a healthy heart rate. The nurse said it was good that I stopped the lisinopril when I did and reassured me that everything is looking good so far.
