How long did you bleed after cervix check?

So I'm 38&1/2 weeks. I was checked today-90% effaced 1cm dilated. She told me I'd experience some spotting for the check because the cervix is very thin and she had to go up behind baby's head to get to my cervix...that hurt! Anyway, I had some significant blood right after; I waited it out and called about an 1.5 hours later. She reassured me it was completely normal unless I was soaking a pad. So now, 3 hours later, I'm still bleeding a little. Best way I can describe it is if I were on my period, I wear a light day tampon today? I feel like it's a little more than spotting, but not bleeding?

Re: How long did you bleed after cervix check?

  • No tampons while pregnant.

  • OP - I spotted for about 3 days after my last internal, as well as lost my plug (sorry, TMI). I read that as long as it's not bright red or soaking a pad that it's perfectly normal. If you're concerned, I would recommend calling your OB. Better safe than sorry, but if you're just spotting you're probably fine.

I believe the OP meant that IF she was on her period she would wear a light tampon. Not that she was going to wear one now.

At least, I hope that's what OP meant. Lol

Yes, that's what I meant! Lol!

I had a check this morning with an OB who was decidedly not gentle and haven't bled.  I may spot later tonight, but I haven't yet.  We're all different so what's normal for me is probably odd or could even be dangerous for someone else.
If there's something strange underneath the hood.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  If there's something weird and it don't look good.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  Immediately.  If it's new, painful, and possibly pregnancy related get your ass off the internet and call your doctor.  It's for your health and your child's.

I called her 1.5 hours after appointment today and was still "lightly" bleeding. She assured me it was ok if I wasn't soaking a pad. I thought I'd ask for other experiences.
  • If your doctor said not worry unless you are soaking a pad, I would trust that advice- sounds like you're okay. I had a check this morning and my doctor told me bleeding is normal and expected.

Okay so I thought I knew my anatomy pretty well but I guess not, why is the cervix behind the baby's head?! Sorry for the stupid question, I have yet to get a cervical check but I'm pretty scared to based on how painful everyone says they are :-S
  • Last few times I bleed for 5ish hrs afterward. This time no blood so far got checked 10 this morning. It can last up to 3 days as long as it doesn't fill a pad you are good.

Apparently, don't quote me, baby's head is so low-could hardly measure it on ultrasound today, that in order to check the cervix she had to go down and behind? She said babys ready-very low.
  • Thanks for everyone's experiences. I was just curious about others' experiences. I trust my doctor-I just hate seeing blood! Lol
  • My check up was at about 9am and I had bleeding till I got home around 6. It was never bright red, more like old blood.
  • I've had my cervix checked 3 times this pregnancy, the last 2 being my 36th and 37th week. I haven't experienced any bleeding afterward, but I echo @VexedMommy... what is normal for me or her may not be normal for you. I'm sure you are fine as long as the blood stays on the light side. Take a deep breath and if the blood flow becomes heavier again, call the doc. Everything will be ok.

Your cervix is at the top of your vagina towards the back for most of your pregnancy and moves forward as it dilates and effaces. If the baby's head is engaged before that happens, the cervix would be behind the baby's head.
OP - I had light spotting for a day or so after a particularly uncomfortable cervix check. As your doctor said, unless you start to bleed enough to soak a pad, you should be okay.

  • I've been checked 4 times. The first 2 times I had spotting for 2 days, the 3rd time I had significant spotting for 3 days and the last time I had very light spotting for maybe a few hours. I think it varies from woman to woman and exam to exam.
  • I had a check this morning and while I was walking back to the office, I had a giant gush of blood and what I thought was fluid... Went through my liner, down my legs, etc. My doctor sent me to L&D because it was a gush (not just spotting) and I was having contractions about 4-5 minutes apart for a couple hours. The amniotic fluid tests came back negative, the contractions subsided after about 4 hours (maybe 10 minutes apart now) and I was sent home. I'm having super light spotting now but would expect it to be gone by the morning. I would call if you're still having any sort of spotting or bleeding the day after the check. You never know!

I would be soooooo pissed if a stupid check caused me to go into labor before I was ready. Some next level anger would run through me. Im Glad it was a false alarm for you.
  • @rubirubi89 It was very surprising and I was a little upset! I haven't had any bleeding at all after previous ones and actually after this one, I thought that it was the least painful. Luckily I am 38.5 weeks so it's not super early but I want this little guy to be fully cooked before he arrives! :)
  • I’ve been spotting for a day and a half now after my 37 week dilation check. It’s was my first check. Not sure I will do another one if it’s going to bleed got 2-3 days after.
  • My stupid OB checked cervix last time said it was closed (37w), today is 38 w she dilated me with finger without even telling me what she’s doing. She said it’s better to induce you and open it 1 cm so you don’t spend 5 days in LD. Do you think it’s ok? I was upset. Her nurse told that she did it to her and she went on labor next day. I DIDNT. want to go on labor. After that I gushed some dark blood right there in bathroom with some bloody clot ( don’t know if mucus plug). I think I’m not gonna go to her office anymore
