Feeling baby

I'm a ftm - never made it this far with previous pregnancies - currently 17-4.
When did you first feel flutters?  I haven't felt anything yet and my anxiety is going nuts. I know it's normal not to feel anything yet and every one is different.
Just curious.

Also 17+4 and I’ve been playing the “gas or baby?” game since about week 13, but definitely feeling baby since around 15 weeks. It was the same with my second.

My first, I didn’t feel until after 20 weeks. Being a FTM you’ll probably feel baby on the later side, but the placenta can also affect things. I had an anterior placenta with my first, so the placenta created a cushion, muffling the sensation a bit. My second baby had a posterior placenta. Not sure where the placenta is this time yet!

  • Lots of what you can feel at this point if it’s your first depends on where your placenta lies. Try not to stress. ❤️
  • Congrats on making it this far @mitchip! I had an anterior placenta with baby #1 and didn’t confidently feel anything until like 21/22 weeks. It gets a TON easier with each baby. I’m brewing #4 and felt this one somewhere around 14 weeks. What I’m saying is don’t freak out you’re within normal range and if you’re like I was/am and need the reassurance, just buy a doppler.

  • Ok thank you all.
I feel calmer knowing ftm feel them so much later.

My doc advised me not to get an at home Doppler because of my anxiety issues. He feels it could make it worse on a bad day if I can’t find it myself.

@mitchip I’ve never had a home Doppler for that exact reason. It’s reassuring when you can find the heartbeat, but if you can’t it’ll be a million times worse. And chances are everything is fine!

It was pretty funny actually, I remember seeing my son during the anatomy scan. He was SO active, jumping and kicking around. And I couldn’t feel a thing 😆 I know it feels like a long time, but in just a few weeks you’ll be able to feel baby for sure. I know people who haven’t felt anything until week 25 or so, it’s normal!

  • I'm a ftm as well and have only started feeling the baby in the last week or two (I'm a day away from 20wks). It's pretty different from gas and muscle twitches. To me, it feels like when they do the swab during a pap smear 🤣😳 I don't know if anyone else feels that way, but it's what it makes me think of right now. I'm not sure how that'll change or when it'll get stronger or more consistent.....
  • Ooo that's so exciting! I can't wait!
  • I am pretty certain I felt a flutter at 17 wks but nothing I’m confident about since. I’m 19 wks today. I don’t get my anatomy scan until 22 wks :(
  • Isn’t the waiting terrible??
We’re going for our anatomy scan next week and I’m so excited I could throw up (which is still happening 🙄)

My AS is July 5th, I’m so excited to see baby again!

(to clarify my previous post: that was the AS for my first kiddo, not this one)

  • @mitch Definitely don't get a doppler. My trained midwife couldn't find the heartbeat last week. Everything's fine you can see the full story in the June check in.

I've felt all my babies very early but I'm pretty sure that it's because I had a copper coil for 5 years. I could feel poking and making me cramp, etc. at least once a day for the full 5 years. So I think I'm just acutely aware of my uterus. Even now I can mostly only feel it when I lie down quietly and put my hands on my bump.
  • Yep- I’m playing the “gas or baby” game at 18 weeks!
  • @mitchip, ftm too.  I took a video at AS (18wks) since I didn’t feel anything yet but they were moving on scan.  I watched those 20 seconds probably an embarrassing amount of time but helped me.  It has been a week later, and I still can’t feel anything without provoking them (singing post nap while laying and pushing on belly).  Post nap I can feel em, if I belting out some Whitney or Taylor, so started daily 10 min concerts.  I recommend taking a video to help with anxiety.  Good luck
  • Anybody feeling baby on the outside yet?

we ate some italian sausages for dinner one night and baby was going crazy in my belly and I could feel him kicking me a couple times only.
I ate the leftovers the next day and the same thing happened. Either he really liked them, or he absolutely hated them. lol.

I’ve felt baby on the outside for a while now, and I’ve seen the kicks a couple times too! My H felt him kick once as well, after lots of unsuccessful attempts (baby always stops kicking the second H puts his hand on my belly lol).

  • Same for me, mine are daily (this morning from five to seven am 🙄), but usually on the inside. Or I can see my tummy move, but hubby has only felt them once. Hopefully soon!
  • Baby stops moving as soon as hubby touches my belly too. I know this is just the beginning but it's still feels so weird to me and I know it's only going to get more intense. I'm scared and so excited. haha.
  • 22 weeks here and I’m also feeling LOTS of inside movement. It is shifting from flutters to flips, punches and kicks. As far as outside goes, I’ve only felt that a handful of times so far and it’s never still happening by the time I alert my husband. He will get to feel it eventually. It is so sweet when it does happen because it feels like baby is reaching out to me when I touch my belly.
  • I've felt them a little from the outside. It took my husband ages to be able to feel them with my other two. There was one time near the end with my first that he had his foot wedged right into my side and we could feel his individual toes.

They're still little enough to do full rolls at the moment and I find that really intense. They can't do such big movements later but you definitely get kicked a lot more.
  • FTM and almost 23 weeks. I barely feel anything still! Maybe some flutters at night or in the morning. We have an apt tomorrow so I’m excited to see how active baby is!
