1st Trimester

First OB Appt

I am excited and nervous about this first OB appt. My husband and I recently moved to a new area and this is the first time meeting the dr. I have so many questions. They also scheduled me for an annual which I really do not feel is necessary. How long was your first appt?

Re: First OB Appt

  • Totally normal to be excited and nervous for that first OB appt, especially in a new area with a new Dr! I had my first OB appt 2 weeks ago and it was on the longer side. I brought a notepad and pen as I had several questions and wanted to make sure I could jot anything down that my doc said. She did an ultrasound and then walked me through various future ultrasounds (some required and some optional) as well as additional genetic testing etc. They had also ordered several blood tests prior and we went over those results as well! It was around an hour long and then I spent an additional 10 mins with a nurse wrapping up additional paperwork etc. I have a follow up on Monday at 11 weeks and then I will see her about once a month during the second trimester! That’s all I know for now. I have more questions since that first appointment and have those written down and ready for Monday. Don’t worry if you don’t get everything, it’s overwhelming and even though you think you are hearing all the information, it’s so easy to blank later on what was said!

  • Thank you! Did they require you to do an annual?
  • Do you mean annual as in a Pap smear? I think it’s generally recommended to have one done depending on when your last one was. But I know the recommendations change sometimes so I’m not sure.  I didn’t have one at my first in-person appt since I had one earlier in the year when I had my IUD removed.
  • I didn’t have an annual and they have not brought it up as of yet! I have my next appt on Monday!

My doc actually cancelled my annual exam after I tested positive for pregnancy. I think OP can cancel yours unless you have specific concerns you want to discuss in the context of an annual exam
  • I got one during my first appointment, which she said was recommended and then definitely did it since I complained of itchiness since becoming pregnant. Glad I did because I tested positive for a yeast infection & BV!
